AN INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING

An 8 hour course, split over two consecutive evenings to get you on the road to writing.

WEDNESDAY 29th May 6pm-10pm

THURSDAY 30th May 6pm-10pm

We’re going to write a screenplay! OK, not exactly, but we can get the structure in place and prepare you to begin writing your idea.

DAY ONE: The Mechanics
In the first half, we'll go through story structure.
In the second half, we'll look at building character.
We'll finish with a pitch of an idea you'd like to work on, then I'll set an exercise.

DAY TWO: Your Idea
In the first half, we'll structure your idea (though if you'd rather simply take notes and observe the process, that's OK too).
In the second half, we'll look at a series of exercises designed to help you articulate your idea.

THE GOAL
By the end of the two sessions you will have techniques to enable you to begin the task of writing (and re-writing and re-writing...)

WHEN? WHERE? HOW MUCH?
Day 1: Wednesday 29th May. 6pm - 10pm.
Day 2: Thursday 30th May. 6pm – 10pm

4 Cour du Ginkgo, Blvd De Bercy (opposite Cafe Chambertin)

€60 for the 8 hour course.

Please pay €20 deposit on line to secure a place.

DURING THE COURSE
We'll examine the structure of a selection of movies.
We'll contrast action with theme (What's your story about? (ACTION) What's your story really about? (THEME). ... Or, if you like, "What's on the poster vs what's in your heart?"

We'll build a physical picture of your story - the ammunition needed before you begin your first draft.

MY EXPERIENCE
I've had two scripts produced by the BBC in the UK: “FRENCH SEX AT THE WILMSLOW REX” and “THE NQ48.”

Plus I've written and produced two full length films, “A DROP OF THE PURE” (2009) plus “THE LOVE THAT LASTS FOREVER” - currently in post-production.

I was employed to do a re-write of an American teen horror film in Hollywood.

I've completed the BBC SPARKS radio writing course – the BBC’s in-house training for new writers.

I was invited into the ROYAL NATIONAL THEATRE in London to attend their professional training after they read my stage play, GONZO.

I recently recorded a radio version of a script called SUNLEY (about a family struggling to protect their disabled son from an exploitative care worker).

I'm represented by The Micheline Steinberg Literary Agency in London.

I trained as an actor at THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ART, London.

FINALLY
We often have great ideas, but lack the techniques to get them written. We have a beginning but no end, a middle but no beginning etc. Or perhaps we mistake a premise for a story? Or we just end up writing one long ACT ONE, with no changes and development to keep the audience enthralled.

Before you create a first draft, it’s useful to work out exactly what story it is you want to tell. Do you have your key ideas yet? Or do you need to keep thinking about it some more? Maybe more thinking isn't the answer and you need to get down to the physical task of writing?

By following principals of structure you can start to understand what you have and what you still need.

I hope this race through the basics of screenwriting structure will provide ideas and insights for writers, film-makers and actors alike.
