Saint Nicholas Day Happy Hour--Czech Style

  • December 5, 2013 · 7:30 PM

Don't put away your devil horns or angel wings just yet...

So the Czech Republic and other Slavic countries celebrate St. Nicholas Day in early December (December 5th in the Czech Republic).  It's a unique holiday and I say it's a good enough reason to have a happy hour.

Czechs celebrate the day by dressing up as one of either three characters--St. Nicholas, an angel or a devil.  They go door to door and the parents tell the visitors if their young children have been good.  If they're good, they get chocolate from the angel.  If they're bad, and this is true, the devil puts the kid in a bag and says, "I'm taking you to hell!" only to let the kid escape at some point and run back to the house.

So let's drink to the psychological scarring of children at a local Czech and Slovak bar. Read more about it here and here.  Costumes encouraged!

    Hi everyone,

I just got home from work--no way I'll be there on time. Hopefully by 8. Sorry for the lateness...

Also, I don't have a smart phone so if you need to get in touch with me, call or text.

(Sorry I couldn't answer this earlier--they block Meetup at work) NO you don't have to dress up at all, it's just a happy hour. That said, I'll have a St. Nicholas pope hat.

Listening to Christmas carols as I put together my costume hat for tomorrow. Devil horns, angel wings and Pope hats are definitely not necessary but I hope I'm not the only one!

This place makes one delicious burger. Technically a meat cutlet wrapped in dough. Yum.

Grandma was a citizen of Czechoslovakia and listed "Slovak" as her native language & nationality on her immigration forms. :)

Be good to venture and see what more Park Slope has to offer. Any recommendations on the menu would be appreciated.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
