Fall Creek Falls mini-loop...with Cane Creek upstream detour

  • Jun 7, 2014 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join us for a scenic, twisted trek that loops within one of Tennessee's most visited state parks: Fall Creek Falls.

Depart Time @ 1st CARPOOL LOCATION 8:00 am (CT): In Hermitage, Kroger off Exit 221.

Depart Time @ 2nd CARPOOL LOCATION 8:35 am (CT): In Lebanon, Home Depot off Exit 236. We should be at the FCF Visitor's Center parking lot at by 10:30am (CT).

HIKE DISTANCE :Approximately 8 - 9 miles total.  Hike time ~6 hours.  We will be hiking/rock hopping in the Cane Creek for about 1.5 miles as well, which makes activity time estimates difficult.

Hiker Signup Minimum: 4  /  Maximum: 15

DIFFICULTY RATING :Moderate to Strenuous. There will be a lunch break, time out for a few breaks for rest/snacks and photos as needed.

Rating "6.5": Strenuous due to uneven trail terrain, distance, elevation changes and the fun off-trail Cane Creek section.  Highlights may include but are not limited to: marked trails, limited off-trail bushwhacking, stream crossings.

Rating Scale:

1-2: Take the Kids & or a slow Bike

3-4: Take your tennis shoes

5-7: Take your Time, take your hearty hiking shoes

8: Take a Rescue Beacon

9-10: Take Bear Grylls

DRIVE TIME :1.75 hours from Lebanon carpool, one way.

COST: $1 donation**.  The US dollar goes to help pay for the monthly cost of the website charge.  You can donate online.  Thanks.

DESCRIPTION: From the parking area at the Nature Center we will disembark on the Gorge Trail for Cane Creek Overlook, Rocky Point Overlook, and Fall Creek Falls Overlook, following out to Piney Creek Falls and Overlook.  On the way back we'll visit Milliken Overlook and the base of Fall Creek Falls trail.  After the journey down the steps to Fall Creek Falls, we will use the rockbed of Cane Creek and rock-hop (look out for deep pockets of water), walking upstream to the base of the Cable Trail, if conditions allow it.

If conditions are flooded, we will ascend those many steps up the FCF base trail taking the Woodland trail, then walk the quarter-mile from the parking lot and ramble up and down the infamous Cable Trail (Video shot on Cable Trail ). In the midst and mist of the Cane Creek Overlook it will be an ideal time and place to take a dip, cool off before ascending the 0.25 mile Cable trail.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

My estimation is that we will be off the trails between 4:45pm and 5:15pm (CT).  We will then drive toward the Cookeville (I-40, Exit 288) to grab group grub.  Post hike meal is optional.  If we finish the hike early, then we might push on to Lebanon Chili's for a Saturday night meal.

Please RSVP with integrity.  If you've signed up, then learn you cannot attend, please change your RSVP to "No, Can't Go".

Please offer your carpool driver $15 to $20 cash money for gas, vehicle usage, and driving services.

Cash only, please; no checks, credit cards, or coupons.  Carpool guidelines for this roundtrip:  At the time of this writing, average cost of gas in the greater Tennessee region is $3.50/gal, according to AAA's gas report .  The roundtrip mileage is approximately 240 miles.

Passengers be aware that gas is only one cost in the operation and ownership of the vehicle.  The amounts in the examples above are the recommended Minimums.  Drivers and passengers should determine the exact amount based on real-world factors: miles per gallon, # of passengers, etc.

**The $1 for me is always optional and  appreciated. Hiking is free, but I spend hours researching, exploring, planning, writing, posting, and following up on events. Weather forecast has not changed substantially for Fall Creek Falls----hike is a go! If you've never hiked with this group before, be sure to check out the event description fully so that you are aware of the atypical hiking agenda.
