Learn and enjoy folk dances from around the world at 7:45 pm any Friday night.

The Pasadena Folk Dance Co-op welcomes you to learn fun dances like these from around the world. We dance recreationally in casual clothes and have a lot of fun. Sometimes we perform or have festivals where some of us wear costumes. International folk dancing is great exercise and a wonderful way to make friends. Sometimes we do zany things like this combination dance/water fight. No partner, special clothing, or multi-week commitment is needed. Just show up any Friday in casual cloths and comfortable shoes. People of all ages and dance ability will enjoy dancing with us. Our group has about 30 people dancing most nights.

The majority of our members are middle aged or beyond, but we have some younger members too and people occasionally bring their children. Many of our members are single, but we also have a number of couples. (Most couples dance with other people as well.) Some of our dancers have danced professionally and others had never danced before they joined us. Most of our dances are easy to learn, but we have a few that are quite vigorous and/or complicated, but well worth the effort. Dancers feel free to sit down and socialize when a dance is too difficult for them. No one will pressure you into doing a dance that seems too difficult for you, but we provide lots of help and encouragement. Some of the music we dance to is so beautiful that it will take you breath away! Our members have formed many long-term friendships and, over the years, we have become a community. We dance every Friday on a beautiful wooden floor at the Throop Memorial Church, 300 S. Los Robles (at Del Mar) in Pasadena. Lessons begin promptly Fridays at 7:45 pm and continue until 9 pm, followed by refreshments and more dancing until 11 pm. We would appreciate it if you RSVP, but it's not strictly necessary. Many of our regular members are not members of Meetup. We usually have over 30 people dance with us , even though the RSVPs on this site may say only 3 or 4.

Your second night is free and you don't have to commit to a series of lessons.

Despite the heat, everyone had a really good time. Although we didn't have any first-timers, there were a few people who had only danced with us three or four times before, and as Jan wrote below, we had some people who had been dancing for a very long time indeed.

No new people tonight, but some real drama, when two people who hadn't seen one another in 50 years found themselves dancing together, asked names, and then ended up hugging. They and their spouses had all been in the same folk dance performing group in 1962! Then we had sweet and sour set dances: One dance was The Sweets of May and the other was Sauerlander Quadrille! That goodness for our big barrel fan, even if it is noisy, it saved the night. We played the music loud. One special dancer was missing from our group tonight because her spouse had serious health problems. She was missed. We hope she is doing nurturing things for herself and will rejoin us soon.

We have a terrific evening in store, with fun dances that will appeal to people of all levels of experience, from our first teaching dance at 7:45 to our last dance at 11:00. We always have a friendly group with a good mix of people who are joining us for the first time and others who have been in the group for decades. I'm really looking forward to Friday!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
