Learn and enjoy folk dances from around the world at 7:45 pm any Friday night.

This week only, if you show up early (at 7:20), there will be a slideshow of the African Safari that two of our long-time members recently went on. International folk dancing is great exercise and a wonderful way to make friends.  There are international folk dance groups all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia and they all do some of the same dances. Once you learn some basic folk dance skills you can enjoy folk dancing where you go.

The Pasadena Folk Dance Co-op welcomes you to learn fun dances like these from around the world. We dance recreationally in casual clothes and have a lot of fun. Sometimes we perform or have festivals where some of us wear costumes. Sometimes we do zany things like this combination dance/water fight. No partner, special clothing, or multi-week commitment is needed. Just show up any Friday in casual cloths and comfortable shoes. People of all ages and dance ability will enjoy dancing with us. Our group has about 30 people dancing most nights.

The majority of our members in Pasadena are middle aged or beyond, but we have some younger members too. If you travel to areas beyond Southern California, you will find many people in their twenties and thirties folk dancing. In our group in Pasadena, people occasionally bring their children. Sometimes dancers bring their well behaved dogs, but they seldom dance.

Many of our members are single, but we also have a number of couples. (Most couples dance with other people as well.) Some of our dancers have danced professionally and others had never danced before they joined us. Most of our dances are easy to learn, but we have a few that are quite vigorous and/or complicated, but well worth the effort. Dancers feel free to sit down and socialize when a dance is too difficult for them. No one will pressure you into doing a dance that seems too difficult for you, but we provide lots of help and encouragement. Some of the music we dance to is so beautiful that it will take you breath away! Our members have formed many long-term friendships and, over the years, we have become a community. We dance every Friday on a beautiful wooden floor at the Throop Memorial Church, 300 S. Los Robles (at Del Mar) in Pasadena. Lessons begin promptly Fridays at 7:45 pm and continue until 9 pm, followed by refreshments and more dancing until 11 pm. We would appreciate it if you RSVP, but it's not strictly necessary. Many of our regular members are not members of Meetup. We usually have over 30 people dance with us , even though the RSVPs on this site may say only 3 or 4.

Your second night is free and you don't have to commit to a series of lessons.

We were lucky enough to have four first-time participants. They, along with everyone else, had a wonderful time, learning lovely dances with great music and socializing with the rest of the group. I was pleased that our newcomers stayed throughout the evening, and I know they enjoyed trying the dances after teaching. Our programs always include some dances that are accessible to everyone, even if they have not seen the dances before. We will start with a new selection of teaching next week at 7:45. We teach the same dances all month long, providing plenty of opportunities to learn them.

The evening began early with a slideshow of the African Safari taken by two of our members. Then the dancing began. We had 4 new people and 36 people who had danced with us before. After teaching and a break for refreshments, we participated in our monthly "And Now For Something Completely Different." This month Roxanna taught us "The Cup Song" while her husband, Robin accompanied us on the guitar. We sang while clacking plastic cups in set pattern, which provided the rhythm. It was a lot of fun, especially when we goofed up. The rest of the evening was taken up dancing the dances taught this month and the previous month, plus many more dances.

This friendly group has a terrific evening planned, starting with introductory teaching at 7:45. The program after refreshments at 9:00 will include dances that appeal to people of all levels of experience, and I know everyone will enjoy them. We will also have a special 15-minute activity to learn (well, perhaps "be exposed to" would be more accurate) the cute moves of The Cup Song, a rhythmic sequence with a cup that will mostly consist of laughing together. (Google "the cup song" to see it.) I can't wait for another delightful Friday evening of dancing and socializing with this group.
