Stroll with socks

Hello and welcome to Stroll with Socks - an amazing opportunity to make friends, get some fresh air and exercise, find out about one of London's most misunderstood communities AND increase your Karma balance - all for FREE!!!

Sound too good to be true? Well it really isn't - here's how it works: we'll meet at 6.30 pm, then we'll split into groups of about 4 people, and each group will go on a little wander round various areas of London, stopping to offer a cup of tea and a chat to any homeless people we meet on our travels.  After about 90 minutes we'll meet up again at a nearby pub to share experiences and maybe a drink or 3...

Where do we meet? This week's Stroll with Socks has two meeting points - 1) the steps of St Martin in the Fields, in Trafalgar Square, and  2) next to the food stalls at the Tooley street entrance to London Bridge Station. You can go to whichever you want, but it's helpful if you post to say which one you're going to so we can be sure we have enough people at each.

The aim of 'Stroll with Socks' is simply to have non-judgemental human-to-human conversation with members of the homeless community - something that happens all too seldom in our busy city, leaving some homeless people feeling very isolated. A gift of a pair of socks along with a few kind words can help to change that feeling.

You don't have to bring anything at all (not even socks) - it just takes a non-judgmental attitude and a willingness to get involved. But if you'd like to help out materially, dark-coloured clothing (easier to keep clean) - socks and boxers are particularly appreciated; basic toiletries such as shower gel & deodorant go down well too - and wholesome food such as sandwiches, pasties, pies, fruit etc are always appreciated.

HOWEVER: the conversation is MUCH more important than the stuff.

We'll wander around for about 90 minutes and then meet up again at a pub for a socialising / debriefing drink or two - the official 'Stroll with Socks' pub is The Stage Door, 28-30 Webber Street, London SE1 8QA.

If it's your first time: Fear not! We all know how it feels to be new and you can be sure of a warm welcome from your fellow 'pavers'. Just mention when you sign up - and when you turn up at the meeting point - that you're new, and you'll be introduced to some of our friendliest and most experienced members who can show you the ropes.

Got any questions? Why not call one of our 'regulars' who will be happy to answer any of your questions...

A reminder to Pavement People old and new: This is your group - here are some of the ways you can play your part in making your group the best it can be:

- make the most of the opportunity to contribute positively to the comments board below

- keep your RSVP up to date

- come along to our quarterly meetings where we discuss and vote on ideas and suggestions for ways to improve what we do

- come to the pub after the meetup to chat and share thoughts with fellow pavement people

- VERY IMPORTANT: if you are going to be late or can't make it after all, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE LET US KNOW as otherwise we'll be stood around waiting for you - we know who's coming so we will wait til everyone's there before leaving...

Looking forward to seeing everyone!!!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
