VOLUNTEER:Ronald McDonald House Meal Prep & Serve

**Please note that this event is Thanksgiving Weekend so take that into consideration as you commit to this volunteer event.

****ALSO: There will be a dinner planning session on Saturday morning, November 9th @ 10 AM at the Ronald McDonald House - all volunteers are expected to attend to help plan the dinner. If you have not been to the house this is a great time to see it!

What we will be doing: Through the 'Meals from the Heart' program at the Oak Lawn Ronald McDonald House, in their fully-equipped kitchens, we as a group, will plan, purchase, cook, and serve a wonderful meal for the families staying at the house as their child is healing at the hospital across the street from the house.

We will plan a meal for about 40 people - and we also will enjoy the meal when we are there!

The house has a beautiful kitchen fully decked out with multiple appliances & cooking stations & sinks and a full dining room for guests to enjoy heartwarming & stomach-filling meals.

Read more about the program and houses below:

‘Meals from the Heart’ Program:
Volunteer to provide a home-cooked meal for our families

As the saying goes, “the kitchen is the heart of every home”. The meals you provide bring love into the Ronald McDonald House every day, allowing families to unwind, de-stress, and fortify their bodies to be at their best for their child in the hospital.

Meals from the Heart volunteers work as a group to plan a menu, purchase the ingredients, and prepare the meal in our full service kitchen, allowing families to find nourishment and comfort in a shared meal.

Ronald McDonald Houses in the Chicagoland area:

Our four current Houses provide a ‘home away from home’ to keep families together. Located near Advocate Children’s Hospital, Loyola University Medical Center, University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, and the new Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, the Houses allow families to eat, sleep and find the emotional support they need - just blocks from where their child is being treated. This year we provided over 30,000 nights to families, offering them care and comfort during their hours of greatest need. While we suggest a donation of $10 per night, no family is ever turned away if they are unable to pay.

Hey Patti...let me know if you may need additional help...my trip was cancelled and I'm in town.

Hi Arika - Yes - could you help tonight? I have a terrible cold & don't think it would be good for me to stay and pass it on to everyone. We have all of the food but if you can help set up, serve, and clean up that would be really helpful.

Hi, I am currently looking for a volunteer opportunity for me and some of my coworkers. I think this would be a great opportunity. Please let me know if there is anything open. Brittany

I removed myself from the waitlist, to hopefully give someone else a chance to participate in this event. It's a humbling experience to serve the needy in this type of setting. I'll see you at the next serve

Hi, I have a question I am on the waiting list so does this meeting pertain to me? If so unfortunately I wont be able to attend because I am a Veteran and will be participating in a Veteran Parade. So sorry I really did want to form part of this team.

okay, I am completely confused. I thought this meeting was cancelled due to them not needing our help anymore? I had the meeting on my calendar for months but then emailed someone after I read it was cancelled and they confirmed that it was? Did I dream this? anyway, I have made other plans now since I thought it was cancelled :(

    November 8, 2013

    • Patti

It was never cancelled - I will change your rsvp

I am still interested in helping on Nov 30th but I am not able to attend the meal planning event this Saturday as I am participating in a Lung Cancer walk here in Naperville. May I please be excused for the meal planning? Please confirm. Thank you.

Patti, in the future, you should state that it's a requirement (and not just that you're expected) to be at the planning session in order to attend the actual dinner.

    • Shelly S.

She sort of did, Therese, in the details for the event. See above. Sorry you cannot make it tmrw.

Hi all - Thank you for volunteering for this. The one we just did on Saturday was a huge success due to all of the volunteer's efforts. Please make sure you have the Nov 2nd @ 10 AM dinner planning session on your calendar as I am not going to create a separate meetup for that.
