Spring Time Desert Run - Bonanza Gulch

  • March 30, 2013 · 1:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will be starting our trip from the Old Desert Cafe in Ridgecrest.

It takes approximately 5 hours from the bay area to reach this meeting point.  Plan accordingly!

Meet us there between 12-12:30 for lunch or arrive around 1:30pm so we can all caravan to the first trail head.

The meeting point:

Old Desert Cafe (12:00 -12:30 for lunch)15668 Sierra Hwy, Mojave, CA 93501(661)[masked])

Communication: Some of us will be on CB we will also have some motorolla talkabout radios.  If you have one bring it to make trail travel easier... Talkabout radios

This location is close to the following areas that we are planning on exploring:

Bonanza Gulch (read more)

Last change canyon (read more)

Trona Pinnacles (view pictures)

We also want to visit the saloon in the living ghost town of randsburg (read more) (make sure to read the comment :)

Mojave Lava Tube Trail (read more)

Here is a simplified overview of the area (see map)

There is much more to explore and do out in this area.  If anyone has any other trails or recommendations for camp sites and destinations send them to me!

Right now the plan is this.  Start at Bonanza Gulch entrance off of route 14.  From there we will just play it by ear... no structure or schedules.  We will just take our time and explore the area and hopefully make it to the destinations above while exploring the areas.  Plan for 2-3 days of camping and 1 night in a hotel if needed based on the group.

For those of you attending understand join us at your own risk.  Bring food, water, and anything else you need to live in the desert for 4-5 days.  Runs can be made back to town to restock your cooler etc...  you will need to be self sufficient for all your needs as well as reliant on your vehicle and off road experience.

If you can join us for a portion of the trip feel free to do so. If you plan on extending the trip easy destination from here are Mojave Desert, Death Valley, Bishop, etc...

Looking forward to further input & feedback.

Sean, thank you for helping me plan this!

Adam

What an incredible trip! I can't believe how many trails are out there. Next time I'm bringing a pickaxe and a better flashlight; so many mines to explore. I feel sorry for all those who couldn't make it on this one. I can't wait to get back out there.

Looks like a great adventure...will unfortunately be at the Grandparents for the holiday, and off to go spring skiing after that! Anyone planning on a caravan to Moab?

Guys, if I want to join in on the next trip do I simply show up? I'm not new to 4-wheeling but new to the bay area. Also - do you think a stock WJ will do on these trips or will I end up destroying it (I'm a CJ/Wrangler person but this is all I have for now :) )

    Thanks!

You know better than I.... come at your own risk :) The WJ may be ok for the desert trip. The next trip is not as easily doable without high clearance/sliders/etc... For the next trip I am leaning towards Coyote Flats... Climb to the top and spend 1-2 nights up there. Its stunning scenery and pretty remote.

I recommend http://www.everytrail.com for your travel, you can use the iphone/android to navigate, it is amazing, you can also record your trip for later to share with people.

Here is a sample trail for red canyon -

I'm not sure if this fits your needs but it worked for me. I guess having a gps can be much more accurate.

      Correct.

Sean Keep sending the links over. The first picture looks like a good spot to camp down in the wash... if there is no rain in the hills :) http://www.highdesertdrifter.com/cudahyCamp.shtml

This sounds awesome! However, I got this jeep recently and wouldn't mind testing it out at the "pismo beach trip, where do I find details about that?

    February 27, 2013

    • Roy P.

Ok, here is the link to the trail map. I'm sure we can do the grey solid lines (easy 4x4), and maybe some/most of the dotted grey (hard 4x4), but not the bold dotted grey (extreme 4x4) http://www.deathvalle...

I wish I could come to that a long trip, I have never done that long of a trip out in the open , seems too much for now...

I'll probably need more advice for the next time (summer) :-)

    Have fun and share pictures!

    • Kobi A.

by the way, it seems not too far, in case I want to join for the last night , where could I join??

      March 8, 2013

As it stands right now, I doubt that I'll be able to make it. The excessive oil consumption issue with Franken40 has me concerned enough that I don't want to take it on any long (out of the bay area) trips.

Too bad, because I really enjoy the high desert. Next time!

    March 7, 2013

    • Micheal

Serious blow-by. Engine needs to be rebuilt. I have one, but it will not be done in time.

To bad. Catch you next time.

What if we do a mix of camping and saying in very inexpensive casinos some of the nights as well? I like to take a shower every once in a while. I also enjoy some of the night life in Bullhead City. This would be a good trip to bring moutnain bikes on as well. Who can take bikes off-road?

    February 26, 2013

    • Adam S.

I will be bringing mountain bikes as well... the slot canyons look like fun ;)

      1 · March 7, 2013

I'm bringing my bikes for sure

I understand Death Vally flowers are amazing, I'll ask a friend who went last year..

I would love to go but I can't escape that particular set of days. I do have April 7,8,9,10th off. I can try and move it but I doubt it will happen. I love camping, not worried about that part. I do need to purchase some recovery gear, and would want to check out the conditions. I have a stock FJ with some sliders. It so far has tackled anything I have thrown at it, but I do not have any non stock under body armor or upgraded lower control arms, so I will not be rock crawling.

Good morning Nicole. Hope you can switch things around and join up for the desert trip! - If not, we look forward to meeting you in the future. Smitty Bilt recovery straps and

it is likely that I could make it. We will see.
