intrepid soundcheck jam (1/2)

  • Dec 14, 2012 · 6:30 PM

i have booked some studio time to record my drum kit in preparation for a band project i'll be doing after the new year.

i'm looking for intrepid players of guitar, bass, keys, and vocalists who would like to jam some tunes with me in a small studio w/engineer.

if wires, blinking lights, and microphones make you un-comfortable, then
this is not for you. if you are musically adventurous, lets see what happens.

this room can hold 6 musicians. its located in San Jose in part of the Music Inc complex of practice rooms.

our session tomorrow is now confirmed with Doc at the controls

please plan to arrive around 7pm, or a bit after, as he has to move
some gear out of the way first. i hope we can be underway by a
    bit after 8pm

bring your instrument and any supporting amplification it may need.

he will provide a PA for the vocalists. (no headphones are required,
but if you bring your own. maybe he can give you a feed from the
console. i dunno, its my first time there,)

no kit swap for me at intermission - too many wires ;-) less is more

thanks in advance for your patience, and musical participation.

    disclaimer:
while at this meetup, please be aware of your valuables and
personal safety at all times. (if you need a new tattoo, or check
cashed before pay day, services are with-in walking distance)

see you al tomorrow. i will try to be near the big roll up door
to show you the way in.

Further on Up the Road and Going Down (either version) sound like fun. Here's a few more, just throwing them out there, don't have to do any of them. If any of these are of interest I can bring the charts for them and hopefully post them tomorrow so folks can kick them around. I'm interested in others' suggestions, too!

Use Me and Kissing My Love by Bill Withers

Jumpin At Shadows (Gary Moore style)

    I Can't STand the Rain

Heard It Through the Grapevine (CCR style or Marvin Gaye)

Under My Thumb, Paint It Black, Satisfaction, Wild Horses: Stones

    Seven Nation Army: White Stripes

(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone: Monkees

    Heart Full of Soul: Yardbirds

It's Alright and People Get Ready: Curtis Mayfield

    Black Hole Sun: Soundgarden

Some great choices here Colleen - this should be fun!

What about Further On Up The Road (Clapton version) and/or Going Down (Freddie King or Jeff Beck Group version)? They have straightforward arrangements.

Love both of those songs - good choices!

Anyone want to ride together from the peninsula?

It's really cool -- the studio is about 5 minutes from my home!

I'll suggest some songs later today and I'll be thinking of harmonies with John. I'll be looking for thumbs up or down on each song so we can settle into a proposed list before Friday.

Anyone else who wants to post suggestions should do so soon so we can kick around the list together.

Once we get the list down, I'll rustle up the charts so we have the right chords/key ahead of time. I'll post them here.

musically, an evening of playing whatever sounds good, and stopping if it sounds bad. technically, the exercise is to play music that tests the aspects
of loud, soft, fast, slow, and points in between. logistically, lets plan to take an intermission at the half way point of
the evening so i can do a kit swap.

i think of it as side one, and then, side two.

To clarify, it's BDirking, Victor and myself. I can bring my bass to play on a few songs, but I'd prefer to play the guitar. Gary, did you have a particular genre or feel in mind for this jam?

    December 6, 2012

  • Chris W

It looks like it's Victor and myself on guitars. If anyone has ideas for songs, we can do a bit of prep in advance (to maximize jamming time).

Hey Gary, Do you have any specific songs in mind?
