Canoeing along Econfina Creek

  • March 15, 2014 · 11:00 AM

I know some of you are not a big fan of driving 8 hrs to hike through a few feet of snow, so how about canoeing or hiking through a freshwater spring instead? If there is one thing Florida has plenty of it's water. Econfina Creek is east of Pensacola offer crystal clear water that you can paddle through and some hiking trails too.

This will be a day trip with the option to camp over night.  If you are interested in the over night option please say so.

To rent a boat give these guys a call:

http://www.canoeeconfinacreek.net/index.html

We will meet at the boat house at 11am.  I reserved two boats and have room left on one of them.  They said that they had other boats ready to go and that you just need to call them.  Each boat costs $45 or $22.50 per person.  CASH ONLY! NO PETS! They drop off us and pick us up at the end of the day.

Also post a message saying you got one!

You should bring water and some food to eat.

      March 15, 2014

    March 14, 2014

  • Mona

We reserverd a canoe today and will see you all tomorrow!

    March 14, 2014

  • Peter

People bringing your own boat and last minute canoe reservations. I just talked to the Livery and they said no one has made a reservation for a shuttle. You might want to get on that if you don't want to do the shuttle yourself. It is also still possible to make a reservation for a canoe tomorrow.

My number is[masked] if you can call. I'm still going. Haven't made a reservation. I can call to do it in a few as soon as I'm done with my patient.

      March 14, 2014

  • Sonya

Peter....I need help. I am suppose to be with LaQuanda. I don't know about reserving a canoe.... This is my first time with your group so I don't know anyone...What should I do?? I don't want to be in a canoe by myself

    March 14, 2014

    • Peter

I'll e-mail you this also. I just sent LaQuanda a message. If she flakes I'll bring a boat and you can take my spot in a canoe. If you two can get in touch with each other then there is still time to rent a boat using the number in the description.

      March 14, 2014

  • Peter

All looks good for tomorrow. Don't forget to confirm your canoe reservations today! Weather report is 72 and party cloudy so don't forget sunblock.

    March 12, 2014

LaQuanda what do we do from here ??

      March 13, 2014

Sorry, catch you next time. Have to work done on car.

    March 12, 2014

  • Sonya

And did yall decide to camp somewhere??

    March 12, 2014

  • Carol W.

I will be bringing my kayak and can shuttle with someone who has a truck. My esape can only carry one kayak so I can carry people back from 388 to starting point. Let me know who has a truck so I know if I need 25 or 5 dollars.

    March 11, 2014

  • Carol W.

Just talked to the Canoe livery people and if those who are bringing kayaks meet at 1030am at the livery, we can shuttle ourselves for $5 or $25 for them to shuttle us back from highway 388. You can call them only until 12 pm each day.

    March 11, 2014

    • Peter

      thanks for looking into this

      March 11, 2014

  • Michael

Looks like my brother will be in town. Not sure I will be able to swing this or not… and, if I did, I would be bringing him and a kayak for both. I'll just have to see at this point. peace

    March 10, 2014

    • Peter

Keep me up to date. Doing the shuttle ourself is easy right? If we can't piggy back on the canoe shuttle we might need to do it ourself.

      March 11, 2014

    • Carol W.

Email sharon about shuttling ourselves. We tried that last time with difficulty, because we started too far up. Without the canoe livery we will have to meet at highway 20 canoe launch and end at highway 388 bridge. 388 has limited parking.

      March 11, 2014

  • LaQuanda

Anyone else need a canoe buddy?

    March 10, 2014

    • Peter

If you can't find a buddy here there might be a guy from my work looking for a buddy.

      March 11, 2014

  • Robert W W.

Do we meet at 8A or 11A?

    March 10, 2014

    • Peter

      11am at Econfina Canoe Livery

      March 11, 2014

  • Steve

For those who might be relying on their smartphone GPS. I think cell phone communication does not work in the area where we are going.

    March 10, 2014

  • Steve

I will be taking my own Kayak.

    March 10, 2014

  • Mona

    Peter where do u meet?

    March 10, 2014

    • Peter

I was able to get in touch with them this morning! We will meet there at 11am.

      March 10, 2014

  • Peter

I've been having trouble catching the canoe people on the phone. Last time I got in touch with them with little trouble. Try giving them a call yourself and reserve a boat. I have a kayak and will take that out so don't worry about no one else showing up!

    March 7, 2014

  • Marina

I definitely want to go but can i rent a kayak?

    March 3, 2014

    • Carol W.

Yes, the times I have been there, the delivery companies provide rentals

      March 4, 2014

    • Peter

Thats the plan! After I have a chat with the rental company I'll send out another e-mail.

I wouldn't mind staying over if anyone else is...also, I've heard the trail(s) around the creek are nice. I'd do a hike the next day before driving home if anyone is familiar with the area... Carpool from Gulf Breeze/Navarre? I have an extra tent, air mattress and sleeping bags if needed.

    1 · January 19, 2014

    • Steve

If the area is as nice as I've heard I wouldn't mind an overnight if a few more would like to join in. I'm sure carpooling is doable when we know how many are actually going.

  • Steve

I'm looking forward to getting back out on the water either by Paddle Board or Kayak. Come hell or high water I'm going to make it this time!

    January 21, 2014

  • Steve

My paddleboard is not going to work for this trip I should have a Kayak by then.

    January 9, 2014

  • Peter

I'm punting this trip until March since none of the people left on the list are a "firm" yes. Plus there is the whole issue of boat availability. If anyone wants go hiking this weekend instead send me a message. I'll probably do something last minute.

    January 3, 2014

Anyone got a boat to spare? I got a 1 person kayak and susan has a boat. Just called the canoe rental place they said to call back Friday and see if they can rent us a boat. Not sure if its because others are renting them or if they want to see if they are still hung over from new years.

This is truly a "must see/do" experience for right here in the panhandle of Florida! I may even burn a day of leave for it, honestly. I will be seeing what I can do, and updating as the time closes in.

Reading the comments it seems like a lot of people can't make it because of the date...is it set in stone or could we go the following weekend?

    December 28, 2013

yeah considering how close it is, it is set in stone. We can organize another in the not to distant future. Seems to be a bit of interest in it.

Directions #2: from SR 20 to Walshingham Park

Take SR 20 to Strickland Rd and turn up Strickland Rd. Note: The get out is just east of Strickland Rd, over the bridge that crosses Econfina Creek on the north side. There is plenty of parking here, and a great place to meet up and carpool with the kayaks up to the put in.

Turn north onto Strickland Rd (turns into Porter Pond Rd). Continue on Porter Pond Rd for a couple long winding and turning miles. Stay on Porter Pond Rd until you hit Hampshire Blvd on your right. Turn right and continue on Hampshire Blvd until you hit Walshingham Bridge Rd. Turn right on Walshingham Bridge Rd and take that for about a mile or so. Where it appears to fork, take the left (safer) fork (both lead to continuing left on Walshingham Bridge Rd) for another mile maybe, the Walshingham Park will be on the right.

As I said, after driving both, I prefer this much more; especially with the take out area being so perfect for meeting and carpooling. peace

Directions #1: from Hwy 77 to Walshingham Park

From I-10, take 77 south to left on Greenhead Rd (dirt/sand road from here on). Drive Greenhead Rd several miles until left on Porter Pond Rd for a couple miles. Turn right on Hampshire Blvd for maybe a mile until you hit Walshingham Bridge Rd. Turn right on Walshingham Bridge Rd and take that for about a mile or so. Where it appears to fork, take the left (safer) fork (both lead to continuing left on Walshingham Bridge Rd) for another mile maybe, the Walshingham Park will be on the right.

Above is a lot of dirt/sand roads, and frankly, I'd bypass this way and just access from SR 20. It does include part of the same path above, where you turn from Greenhead Rd to Porter Pond Rd, until you reach the Park on the right.

Overall, this was very much a "working kayak" trip that I loved - emphasis on "working". We had to duck under low fallen trees and lift our boats up and over some that were too low. At some points, you may even find it easier to pull your boat out and walk around an obstacle. But, if you're not afraid of a little work… and it can be great fun.. this is a truly wonderful kayaking experience, here in the panhandle!

Also, the place where you can rent kayaks and canoes is the Livery - not very economical, but it's there and available, if you require. From what one woman that talked to them said, they can be jerks when trying to negotiate prices :) Anyway, here's their website: http://www.canoeeconfinacreek.net/index.html

I sincerely hope you all have a blast! Remember too, this is the source of drinking water for that area, so please respect it as such. peace

Having paddled Econfina within the last couple months, I'd highly recommend this experience, even during the colder months. The springs, and there are several along it's length from Walshingham Park to SR 20, are WARM WATER springs… so, definitely doable as far as I can tell!

I sincerely wish I could go, but checking my schedule I work that Saturday, the 4th. I would be all in for the following Saturday and even an overnight; but, I don't want anyone to change things just for me :P

What we did when we went… we met at a put in point where Walshingham Bridge Rd and Walshingham Bus Rd intersect… there's a small park (Walshiingham Park) there with parking for maybe 4 or 5 cars possible. If you do this, just carpool from some point, maybe even where we came out on SR 20 (just east of the creek and where you turn to drive to access Walshingham Park. Here is a great resource with info and such: http://www.clubkayak.com/greenwave/tripreport.asp?trip=436

For the really adventurous souls you may wish to go looking for the Ivorybill Woodpeckers in the Chochawhatchee River Swamp. It is an excellent place to get lost!

Econfina Creek is definitely a must do float. It is a little cool for swimming this time of year but doable. The springs are just off or a part of the creek. I have mostly done Econfina in the Summer after the temps heat up. There is an 18 miles segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail that parallels Econfina. The Mountain Laurel and Flame Azaleas are blooming in late April and early May. I was with a group doing trail work near Econfina this past weekend. Camped three nights at Rattlesnake Lake South Campground. Econfina Creek is north of Panama City and about 160 miles one way from Pensacola.

Econfina sounds great, I am out for January, but should you change the date or plan another one after, I will be very interested to join.

    November 22, 2013

    Econfina is defiantly cool
