Very good considering we only touched on the books (deferred till next time). Enjoyed the review of all the past Booker winners - thanks to Steven for bringing that - and the sharing about books we couldn't finish and favourite descriptive passages.

Based on Carey being one of two authors to win the Booker prize twice, I've printed the list of winners - thought it might be interesting to go through, see who's read what etc.

As a first-timer, perhaps a stupid question, but will I be able to find you at the Wellesley easily...?

It's Bastille Day, so talk French lit?

As I will be giddy with anticipation of school holidays, I will most likely make nonsensical remarks about anything we discuss. My apologies in advance :)

We could always discuss Thank You Jeeves which seemed to get overlooked last time. I've finished Oscar and Lucinda - fabulous book. Two interesting links here: an interview with Peter Carey http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/specials/133_wbc_archive_new/page2.shtml and the Paris Review interview (warning has major spoiler) http://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/5641/the-art-of-fiction-no-188-peter-carey

Sure Steven, that would be nice. Don't take it too seriously, we'll see how we go and what interest and comments we can drum up.

I haven't read any Peter Carey before, but I'm loving the little bit of O&L I've managed to read so far. My busy-busy month at work will be mostly over by Thu morning, so I could read up about PC, and talk a bit. And pay for my drink from last month.

and I have finally managed to read the two borrowed books, which I will bring to their rightful owners on Thursday.

How about; we can talk about authors, I know a little bit about Bulgakov that I can share. Peter Carey anyone...?

I am also only half way through Oscar and Lucinda and haven't started the other one yet. Would also suggest choosing next batch of books now, so we have time to get them.

I agree, there has to be enough time to read the books. I have a copy of M&Margarita if anyone wishes to borrow it.

    That's a good idea. I second that.

    Bit of a perfect storm:

2 biggish books, both of which I really want to read
only 3 weeks between choosing them and the discussion
busiest time of the year at work for me

My vote would be for carrying these two books over to the August discussion, maybe adding one more book if anyone has finished both already. And make this July discussion one where people bring along a book to talk about or add to the list. Or something.

The Master and Margarita sounds amazing. I've just got a Kindle version from Amazon, so hopefully I will be able to read it in time. http://www.amazon.com/The-Master-And-Margarita-ebook/dp/B002RI9CTI/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&m=A3QI763M62X7GQ

No, I am making sure that there is nothing else going on in the hotel so that we can hear each other. Slightly sooner than planned, but going forward the meeting will be closer to mid month. Hope it's ok with all.

Um is there a reason we're a week earlier than usual? Does this mean we are on a 3 week cycle now and I should accelerate my reading speed?
