JavaScript Made Easy (live coding session)

Languages of the web:

HTML is for the structure of the web page.  Think text document.

CSS is for style.  Color and size of fonts, width of images, etc.

JavaScript is for behavior.  But what does that actually mean?  This will be the subject of our next meetup.

JavaScript is the language of the browser.  It has been around for a while and some say it's the future of the web.

Coder: Allen Wyma

Speaker: Lukasz Muzyka

Come to our second live coding session. We code, you watch.  In less than an hour,  we will add JavaScript behavior to our website and make it even cooler.

Please bring your laptop, tablet, or smartphone so you can follow us in real time as we implement new features.

You should come if

  • you're a designer
  • you're a marketer
  • your work relates to the web
  • you're curious
  • you want to broaden your horizons

Please feel free to make a suggestion of a subject that we should cover a month from now.  We need input.  Drop us a line or leave a comment.

What we learned from our first meetup.

- We should code less and explain more.

- We need a second projector to show the code and the results simultaneously.

For all the JavaScript beginners, here's an awesome video series. It's taught in a way that assumes you don't have a computer science background. The teacher explains EVERYTHING. I learnt quite a bit from this series. Go check it out.

Also recommend this video series for more depth. The teaching speed is way faster if you have limited time.

Thanks everybody, it was great to see you all last night. Please let us know what would you like to see next time. Some of our ideas include:
    - SQL (database language - can be quite nerdy)
    - setting up your static website on Amazon S3 (hosting so cheap that is almost free)
    - AngularJS - very modern and useful library written in JavaScript
    - Working with graphics for RETINA displays - high resolution and vector graphics (could be very interesting for designers)

Let us know in the comments what is most interesting for you.

Ok Guys. As I can see above Retina Graphics got the most votes this time. Let us write something about the next meetup. As for the S3 - perhaps I can try to record some screencast and post it up over time between now and event. So everyone get what they want. :)

A somewhat funny video (funnier if you program a lot and know some Javascript) that I think is entertaining:

@Micah, did you happen to solve your issue? I saw you added me but I just missed your message when I came back, and I haven't seen you come back online, after that.

Trying to start writing some pages. In last week's section, what code edit tool Lukas was using? Is it free?

Thanks for the suggestion! Using sublimetext now, and set up the page in local host, so other mobile device can visit. Now just need to try those code from the people can code examples

I'm using TextMate 2. I like it cause you can use command line to open up a project directory or files, which is helpful to me.
