Book Review: Quiet, by Susan Cain

Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie’s birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts.

Susan Cain also has a ted talk, if you'd like a synopsis...

I plan to continue dismissing it. Of course extroverts lie more. They talk more. Hence, they tell the truth more, too. Like anybody else, can do either with good or malicious intent. I consider this claim to be inconsequential, even if it's true.

Your reasoning is sound, Don. I think your argument is as valid as rejecting a statistical average as a reference point given the limitations of its applicability for it remains a characteristic of an assumed population and not of any specific individual. In reality, everything is completely different. I'm sure there are very honest as well as very dishonest extroverts and introverts---all the same. When I raised that point in our last meeting, I was simply voicing a question begged by the discussion. My sentiment towards the scientific study mentioned in the TED talk is as skeptical as it is towards any other scientific study; that is if it doesn't make sense to me I don't buy it.

I was just watching this and apparently extroverts lie more than introverts. Watch it at 4:40 minutes in. Funny I raised that point in our last meet up, yet we all some how dismissed it - perhaps in an attempt not to indulge our egos since we're all mostly introverted. Any way, great talk about Spotting liers. Thought to share. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_6vDLq64gE

I watched the Video Long time ago, and since then I am planning to read the book.
Now, it is a great idea to encourage me to read the book as I can share my thoughts with others afterwards.
I just bought the book, so I will be finishing it by the meeting day.
    Hope to meet you all.
    regards

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
