The human-animal bond has been documented since the beginning of written history. The evidence of how it works, however, only began to be documented about 30 years ago. At the same time, cultural changes began to occur in the treatment of our pets. Who remembers 30 years ago taking the family pet on vacations and looking for “pet friendly” hotels, or walking the aisles of pet friendly superstores with our pooch, or searching out the best Doggie Day Care? Thirty years ago your pet was not considered a “kid”. Today our pets are treated like children. They go to daycare, have “sitters”, live inside, have their own comfortable beds, or sleep in ours and are fed better foods. The demand for better pet food products has held the industry to higher standards and a more consumer driven, quality market. The pet food industry is highly competitive which has resulted in the creation of excellent products. Pet
health insurance is now available. Even though insurance companies pay for a percentage of medical fees, pet parents usually allow veterinarians to provide optimal diagnostics and care for our pets. Pet toys and treats have also changed considerably. Thousands of pet items hit the marketplace every year. The Global Pet Expo in Florida this year spanned the size of 14 football fields. The American Pet Products Association forecasted more than $55.5 billion in spending in 2013 across all segments of the pet industry, surpassing 2012 by 4.1%.
The language of pet parenting has also evolved. Mutts are now designer
dogs, shelters have become adoption centers, biscuits are handcrafted snacks and the dog catcher is now the canine code enforcer.
Positive reinforcement is the proven way to train our pets. We know that pets have feelings and respond better to positive rather than outdated negative reinforcement. There are no-pull harnesses, training classes and behaviorists who work only with pets.
Travel has also entered the pet industry. Over 49% of US adult
leisure travelers consider their pet to be part of the family and 18% take their pets with them when they travel. Pet friendly has evolved into pet welcoming. We want our family members with us. When our pets cannot come along we employ dog walkers, pet sitters, pet daycare and more.
Now consider the introduction of our pet kids to the dating scene! In future articles we will explore pet welcoming suggestions that will encourage successful dating experiences with other pet parents.
The pet parent evolution has become a revolution!
