Robinson Book Club March Meeting- The Lacemakers of Glenmarra, Heather Barbieri

In celebration of St. Patrick's Day we chose a book set in Ireland. Wear your green to the meetup! This story follows Kate Robinson, a struggling fashion designer, as she travels to Ireland to forget a troubled past and reinvent herself. She meets the women of a lace making society in the seaside village of Glenmarra. The lace makers are a diverse group from Bernie the lonely widow, Aileen with her low self-esteem and identity crisis, Moira an abused housewife, Oona a breast cancer survivor, and Colleen a fisherman's wife and leader of the group. The lace makers are finding that their craft is becoming obsolete as people are not purchasing the items they are designing anymore. Kate soon joins the group and finding inspiration through the women convinces them to use their lace making skills to create exquisit lingerie. Of course while they are busy creating their beautiful handiwork, friendships are evolving.

Just finished The Lacemakers of Glenmara -and was not at all ready for the story to end!!! I loved it! I thought the parts about "feeling" the presence of deceased loved ones was very well written! I did actually have a couple of special moments like that with my mother about 6 months after she died! I think this would be a great movie (not sure how they could show the women modeling "the lace" and not get an R rating ;). So glad the majority picked this one for St Patrick's Irish month! It was perfect! Wondering if her other books are as good????

So glad you enjoyed it! She's written two other books that I know of, and they are not at all like this. Her first seems to me to be more of a young adult book, but was a good story that takes place in one of the Dakotas if I recall. The most recent is about a newly divorced mother and the her mother's relationship to the sea. . . . I thought it would be more Elin Hilderbrand, but it was actually more mystical so closer to this book. I've enjoyed them all. Meanwhile, have a wonderful time au Paris avec le chocolat chaud et avec Liselle!
