North Hills Book Club - MWF Seeking BFF by Rachel Bertsche

Our book choice for August is MWF Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a New Best Friend by Rachel Bertsche.  This should be a fun and interesting read that I think will lead to lots of discussion!

This month, we'll meet at The Fox and Hound at Northway Mall.  Be sure to check out their menu below:

Fox & Hound Pittsburgh8000 McKnight Rd, Suite 2002, North Way Mall

**PLEASE NOTE, EVEN THOUGH RSVP'S CLOSE PRIOR, YOU ARE STILL ABLE TO UPDATE YOUR RSVP!**

Thanks!

Here is a bit about the book:

When Rachel Bertsche first moves to Chicago, she’s thrilled to finally share a zip code, let alone an apartment, with her boyfriend. But shortly after getting married, Bertsche realizes that her new life is missing one thing: friends. Sure, she has plenty of BFFs—in New York and San Francisco and Boston and Washington, D.C. Still, in her adopted hometown, there’s no one to call at the last minute for girl talk over brunch or a reality-TV marathon over a bottle of wine. Taking matters into her own hands, Bertsche develops a plan: She’ll go on fifty-two friend-dates, one per week for a year, in hopes of meeting her new Best Friend Forever.

In her thought-provoking, uproarious memoir, Bertsche blends the story of her girl-dates (whom she meets everywhere from improv class to friend rental websites) with the latest social research to examine how difficult—and hilariously awkward—it is to make new friends as an adult. In a time when women will happily announce they need a man but are embarrassed to admit they need a BFF, Bertsche uncovers the reality that no matter how great your love life is, you’ve gotta have friends.

***This book is available in the following formats: Amazon, Kindle, Nook and the Carnegie Library system***

Hope to see you there!

Just a reminder--you are always welcome to join us, even if you haven't read the book!    We'd love to have your company, but do understand that you will hear details about the books, including spoilers and the ending.  Thanks!

If you find you are unable to attend, please update your RSVP no later than 3:00 pm on WEDNESDAY if possible...I'll need to give the restaurant a final count of the group at that time.

I had such a good time. I was a little nervous, but I am so glad everyone was very friendly and welcoming.

Sorry to miss seeing all of you tonight, however I really want to see the Corpse Flower at Phipps - and had plans with a friend to go tomorrow. But - it started blooming yesterday and will only last up to 48 hours - so we moved our plans up to go tonight! PS: The only parts of this book that I liked were the "vignettes" when she described the dates. I thought there were WAY too many "self-help" paragraphs and I didn't care for all the statistics and info from other sources. I hesitated buying this because of it being referred to as a "memoir" - based on previous experience I guess that's just not a writing style I care for! BUT - I wanted to go to the Fox and Hound - AND I wanted to see all of you and join in our super discussions!!!!

Overall I liked the book but have to agree that it bordered on a text book in some parts and was a little clinical. But I did like the "girl date" stories. Have fun at Phipps - hope its not too stinky!

Sorry I'm going to miss you all this evening. I didn't get to the book, and have such a stack that I really really want to read so I will spend my evening doing exactly that. Enjoy Fox and the Hound, the book, the smelly plant (AJ), and each other's company! See you in September.

I actually don't like horror films either - not because they scare me, but because I have always found them to be unrealistic and non-scary.

I only have an interest in "Night of the Living Dead" because it was filmed in Evans City where I currently live - plus it was ahead of it's time for a film made in the 60's starring a black man as the lead character. Watched it for the first time 5 years ago when they were celebrating it's 40th anniversary.

Oops! My bad...disregard my last comment. Looks like another one per table deal!! But, it looks like they do have coctail specials, so maybe there will be something else yummy. Sorry for my confusion!

Girls, it is apparently "Ladies Night" at Fox and Hound on Wednesdays--got an email today that they are offering $5 flatbreads. Not sure if there are any other specials, but you may want to ask :)

Hi Everyone, just wanted to ask that should your plans to attend tomorrow change--please take a minute to update your RSVP. I'll be giving the restaurant a call around 3pm to let them know the final count. Even though I won't be there, the table is under my name. Thanks again to Kelly for hosting the discussion! Have fun and enjoy yourselves :)

Ok, ladies - I am really curious as to what those of you who are reading (or have read) this month's book think about it!!!

    August 15, 2013

    • Vonda

Haven't read it yet - but the copy I borrowed from the library has a bookmark/note in it saying that "Sarah likes me, I am a staff member favorite."
