Music played today: Beethoven Trio op. 11 "Gassenhauer"; Mozart Trio K.498 "Kegelstatt"; Bach Flute sonatas, Telemann, Pfeffer, and Bolling. Did I omit anything?

    January 25, 2014

Thanks to everyone who ventured out. Was pretty mild weather wise. At least where I was coming from. Had so much fun. What a great group. Resourceful resilient truly love music. I had a wonderful time!
Peter and David, thanks for your generosity and organization!!

  • Larry K.

Today's session was great fun. This is a terrific group. Thanks to David for organizing and Peter for hosting.

    January 25, 2014

  • David

Kudos to everyone who came through the snow for an afternoon of music! Special mention to Staci, who improvised by bus and foot when car did not come through. Thanks to Peter for hosting, and for doing some emergency snow shoveling when the storm came harder than expected. Thanks also to Abette, Aaron, and Randy for bringing their keyboards, and to everyone who brought snacks.

Our coolant gauge just went into the red zone, so we are pulled over on Germantown and chelten. Since we got so close, I am probably going to hop out of the car and take the 23 the rest of the way if I can find change or a token.

I looked out my window and the snow has definitely accumulated on Bustleton Ave which is a busy street. For me , who is a wimp in the snow, it is not a good situation. I live about 20 minutes from Peter. Maybe the roads near his house are clearer. Be careful all!

    January 25, 2014

    • Peter A.

My street is well-traveled and plowed early, so it's always pretty clear. I'm heading home in a few minutes, feel free to arrive early if you want to set up.

      1 · January 25, 2014

    • David

I'm going to go over shortly. Drive carefully, everyone.

      January 25, 2014

  • Bonnie

Its snowing hard up here now, with no sign of it stopping, and its sticking to the road. I'm so looking forward to coming, but loading and unloading the harp is a big job under normal circumstances, and this storm shows no sign of letting up here. Whats the situation nearer to Philly? Jennifer, what are your thoughts, I am as anxious to play harp as you are.

    January 25, 2014

    • Maritza

      Ok

      January 25, 2014

It's snowy but not really coming down hard here. Slippery on our steps, butwecan help eaxh other carry things in.

Decided to stay home due to the weather. Hope to meet everyone next time!

Don't know if there are violinists, and if there are how ambitious they feel, but FYI I'll be bringing my copy of the Beethoven Violin-Piano Sonatas. I'm crazy about the "Kreutzer" Sonata but I know that one is definitely concert-level literature. For both instruments.

Larry, I love that Sonata and although I am years away from being able to play it, I hope someone does it with you at a meetup! See you all soon!

Aaron, these directions are much better than mapquest, which takes me to the Pa. Turnpike. Thanks so much!

Uh-oh-- now I see that it's supposed to be snowing tomorrow before & after the planned time. Hope it's not much snow! Otherwise, the driving might be an issue. :-(

Hi everyone. I will be there tomorrow. I opened a discussion topic about the Mozart String Quartet No. 1 that I was hoping to play tomorrow with others. Please take a look a the discussion topic. Thanks.

I'll be glad to work on the cello. Want to pick a couple for practice?

It looks like a great meeting is shaping up -- seventeen people! Would four or five volunteer to bring a snack to share? It doesn't have to be fancy. Store-bought cookies or snacks would be fine.

Hi, just joined the group. I'm a pianist. How does it work with deciding who is playing for the group? Is there a sign up? I'm assuming there's a piano, although I do have a new 88-key keyboard (my present to myself last fall) I could bring.

Hi Chris , nice to hear from you. I need to see how slick everything is by Saturday before I drag that bass down my stairs. It looks like we are going to have a nice crowd. I haven't practiced much either. I think I play the first movement best and I think Randy mentioned that as well. At least we have a pianist that plays Bolling.

      1 · January 21, 2014

    • Randy

Yes I'll bring it, which I guess means driving although I'm still debating that point. I much prefer the train, especially as I will be in Center City in the morning. It looks like the location is very close to one of the regional rail lines.

      1 · January 23, 2014

Really looking forward to this meetup. Decided it was high-time I added a photo. The only one I have on FB is this one showing my attempts at self-teaching classical guitar. This is NOT my instrument though I really love the sound of guitar and would love to actually be able to play it well. I have actually learned a couple pieces and if the group is really forgiving I may trot one or two out at a future Meetup. But don't worry, I'll spare you all this time.

BTW, I'm also a choral singer (Tenor II). Looking through the discussions it looks like some singing does take place at these meetings? Would love to participate in some of that if so. I especially love singing in different languages, which keys into another of my passions (foreign language).

I think there are a few of us that are working on other instruments. Me, I started taking harp lessons about 2 yrs ago and stopped . It is a harp that I assembled from Harpkit.com. If you look through the discussion for this meet up you can see that there will be 3 harps with different skill levels working together for a sound. This meet up group is giving me a reason to work on what I learned. You will find that our group is friendly and welcoming to everyone's talent. I am sure you will be able to work your guitar into a group. Bring music that you like. Sometimes you can just sit, relax, talk and enjoy.

      2 · January 7, 2014

    • Barbara

Welcome, Randy! I have a foreign language passion also though I cannot sing a note. I am an adult student of violin and can play a little on the viola. I hope to meet you at this month's gathering!

Jennifer, I thought I read somewhere you'd like to do that Pfyffer piece....I would like to look at that again... So I am game if your game.

    January 22, 2014

I can't get the link to work, but if the name is Googled along with IMSLP, it comes right up. This is the name: Zwiegespräch in Form einer Serenade, Op.4 (Pfyffer, Franz)

      1 · January 22, 2014

    • Maritza

Ok, we just need to get a volunteer pianist. Thanks for listing the name of the piece, I'm gonna try to look at it....try being the operative word...

I will be away from March 6-21. I have a house with 3-4 separate rooms for playing, and a piano I will have tuned by then. I live in Bala Cynwyd, and there is plentry of on-street parking.

    January 22, 2014

Yes, absolutely! I've just been swamped with work, but have been playing through the pieces, and I've found a whole bag of flute and harp duets(trios) that we can look at! I look forward to meeting you and Lorraine soon.

Hi Bonnie........It will depend on the meeting place but so far we have been lucky to use Peter's house. There is plenty of parking in front of his house. Maybe someone else will offer us their house in January and give Peter a break. I play the bass but there is limited use for it in chamber music so I am working on brushing up my harp skills. I put together a Smartwood harp from harpkit.com. There is a picture on the site in the testimonial area. I am a novice and don't play great. Maybe the harpists could for a chamber group.......something to plan for. Looking forward to meeting you.

I'm fine hosting as long as it serves our needs. And winter is good for my house - it's summer where it gets hot and we don't have air conditioning, so think long term about summer options ... I can also arrange a group of classrooms at Arcadia if we need.

I'll try to find the music and do a little prep. I'm open to any combinations of instruments and cherry-picking movements that we are all comfortable with. We might consider expanding to a fourth instrument to be as inclusive as possible.

    1 · January 22, 2014

  • Larry K.

I'm really looking forward to this. I'll take a close look at the clarinet trio David posted. I'll also bring a cello duet. Anyone interested in the Beethoven string trios? I'll bring them. Peter, did you want to try to put together a cello ensemble. I'm not sure what balance of instruments we'll have.

    January 21, 2014

    • David

Oops, Larry, I recruited Peter for the trio offline. I should have posted that earlier. Sorry about the confusion.

    1 · January 6, 2014

I think people in the group would be interested to learn about classical accordion music. If you have pieces with piano accompaniment or for small ensemble, this would be the place to find people to play with.

      1 · January 6, 2014

    • Jennifer F.

Hi Julie! The accordion is really making a come back these days. I became aware of classical accordion a few years ago. Last year I bought a Paolo Soprani from Joanna Darrow in South Jersey. I've only had 2 lessons, and end up focusing on flute (my main instrument), or the harp (my second instrument). I could use some inspiration to start playing, so I hope you come to a meet up!

Traveling with even a Celtic harp can be a challenge!

Welcome to the group, Bonnie! Yes, there is ample street parking at Peter's house. There are, however, a few steps up to his front porch.
