I really enjoyed the concert, and being in the front row was a definite treat. I can see, though, where one could say Faust was a bit weak. But overall, a good concert, and I loved the Sonata in G Major.

    January 21, 2014

    • Steve S.

Great to see you Carol. I enjoyed the concert very much too! Love the G Major!

  • Neil M. S.

No need for me to see Faust. Too weak a violinist. Melnikov adequate.

Hi Neil, great to see you and Diane! You two are so much fun. I had the advantage of a second row seat, but heard numerous complaints behind me about volume, tone and projection. I think their style and or approach to these works was after more subtlety and exploration of the finer shades of pianissimo. I believe their recording of the Weber is using a period pianoforte, so this kind of intimate performance may have been better suited to a ballroom with live acoustics and with 50 or so people in the audience. Maybe they needed to make an adjustment to the space of a large concert hall, but didn't? I can't imagine being third tier in the back on this one. I'd need to get a hearing aid, and turn it up high! That said, I loved, loved, loved the music!!! Would have liked them to milk the end of the Schubert for more heart-on-sleeve sentimentality. I like slobbering performances. And I agree with further -- her dress was distracting and not in a positive way.

Hi folks, for those who want to go to the pre-concert lecture, I'll make every effort to be at the entrance to Comcast Circle (up the stairs - 2nd level, southeast side at 6:40) I'll carry a little sign that says Meetup (corny I know, but …) Then, at 7:30 (after the lecture) I'll be standing just outside the entrance to Perleman to meet and greet folks. We can convene at the Info desk if you'd like at intermission to discuss how you like the concert. And afterwards if you'd like to go out for a libation, I may be persuaded! I'll hang around at the Info Desk once again.

Have we arranged a special menu. The ordinary menu is too expensive for a quick meal before the concert.

    January 19, 2014

    • Steve S.

It's a $35 menu, I think! And they move you along.

      January 20, 2014

Also, at 5:30, it may very well be a happy hour too.

Checking to make sure a sufficient number of the seats are reserved for pre-concert dinner, 5:30pm at Alma de Cuba...Steve, Sean, Cory, Eileen and me = five (5) diners. Did I miss anyone?

I heard an interview on NPR yesterday with one of their music critics. Isabelle Faust has a new CD out that is considered among the 50 best recordings of the year. I believe she is playing Bartok and the reviewer commented on the unique dancing rhythms highlighted in the music.

I'm excited, I did manage through the slow website to get tickets for: Isabella Faust concert, and the String Quartet. Thank you, Steve, for getting us set up with this! It will be my first visit to the Kimmel Center. :-)

    1 · December 10, 2013

    • Barbara

Oh the Kimmel is beautiful....and these are usually performed in the smaller auditorium. It's wonderful.

Just called directly to PCMS and got through immediately for the $10 tickets. The website is really running slow....telephone proved to be the best method to use! Looking forward to this concert as well as the lecture!

For the Restaurant Week pre-fixe it's $35 per person for three courses which is usually consists of an appetizer, main course and dessert. You also have the option of ordering a la carte.

    December 2, 2013

    • Steve S.

If there is sufficiently more interest in dining as opposed to a "lecture" -- I say go for the food!

      December 2, 2013

    • Gwynne

I did move the reservation to 5:30pm as Sean suggested which should allow for the lecture too.

      December 2, 2013

  • Gwynne

Sean and Carol, I made a reservation at Alma de Cuba for 6pm. Pre-fixe is $35 for three courses. There are two spots left on the reservation.

This concert occurs during Restaurant Week. Is anyone interested in meeting for pre-concert dinner at a participating restaurant near the Kimmel at 6pm?

    November 30, 2013

    • Steve S.

Sounds good to me. For those who don't know about Philadelphia Restaurant Week, some of the top restaurants with regular entrees in the $30 range will do a 3-course prix fixe for $35. With tax and tip it comes to about $45.

Oh, one other thing --- the lecture starts at 6:45 ---- will we have no problem making that as well? Can we bump the dinner res up[ , say 5:30 or 5:45 --- give us plenty of time to eat and socialize before the lecture?

    December 2, 2013

    • Gwynne

Moved reservation to 5:30pm which should give us plenty of time to make the lecture.

Is that $35 a person or $35 for the three courses -- one course per person and $35 split three ways?
