First published in 1969, Slaughterhouse-Five is widely considered to be one of the world's greatest anti-war books. Interestingly, Vonnegut suggests in chapter one that writing an anti-war book makes as much sense as writing an anti-glacier book, both being unstoppable forces. Whether Vonnegut believed that war was truly an unavoidable force of nature or this was simply the heart of the satire which follows is one of the great debates that continue to swirl around the novel to this day.
