Global Day of Code Retreat – Philly Edition

*** REGISTER AT http://www.eventbrite.com/e/global-day-of-coderetreat-philadelphia-tickets-9029119339 ***

Coderetreat is a day-long, intensive practice event, focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design. By providing developers the opportunity to take part in focused practice, away from the pressures of 'getting things done', the coderetreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of skill improvement. Practicing the basic principles of modular and object-oriented design, developers can improve their ability to write code that minimizes the cost of change over time. (Taken from the Global Day of Code Retreat site)

Expect to pair up and practice test-driven development, write lots of tests, and throw away your code at the end of each session. You learn a lot, and it can be a lot of fun.

Tickets go to the general public Friday at 9am, check your email for a special Philly JS Dev code for a reserved ticket.

Jealous that I missed this ! Is there any material that I can get access to.

    Thanks

It was more of a code ping pong with partners - code was deleted after each session - used Game of Life (http://en.wikipedia.o...) and preferred testing framework - ie. Jasmine; qUnit - to set up tests and write GOL code to fit the test.

How does bringing a guest work? Did they have to register on event brite as well?

    December 12, 2013

    • Jeff

      Yes, no?

      December 13, 2013

    • Pam S.

Normally they would register, because that's who gets food and such. At this point, if they want to come, they can come, but food is not guaranteed.

    Hi everyone,
This link is to one of 100+ pages I started building in 2008 and never finished (http://mobilewebappdesign.com/javascript_tutorials.html). It became too big for the clunky navigation and new pages more difficult to add, so I abandoned it. Should I resurrect and update it (I know lots more now) or start-over from scratch? The big picture idea: it was to be the "Whole Earth Video Wall (http://wholeearthvideowall.com/).

"Should I resurrect it?" As far as a concept or a JS Project for portfolio? As far as concept - it is a clever concept - but one that I would think would need momentum from few or # of invested energies to reach potential.

As a a project - it is seems like a great interface/sandbox for JS technologies:)

Thanks Margarita:) Pam I went to eventbrite and it still shows sold out - is there a way you can facilitate this ticket exchange?

    December 12, 2013

    • Pam S.

Just come to the event and mention this. I don't want to create any more tickets on eventbrite, lest that cause more problems/ticket swoop-ins.

      okay good deal. Thanks.

    December 12, 2013

    • jamie

Hey, Margarita. Assuming you mean a ticket on the eventbrite website. I'll take it if you still have it - i didn't see that there was a separate signup site.

Is that Friday, December 13, 2013 at 9:00am? What should an attendee bring? laptop loaded with what?

      December 8, 2013

    • Pam S.

Hey Edward! No that was Friday the november something that they opened. And definitely bring a laptop, bonus points if you already have it set up with a testing env (for example, http://pivotal.github... or http://rspec.info/. If you don't have a ticket yet, we'll be reminding folks tomorrow to update their RSVP, so some spots may open up.

Hi Pam, can I come and just observe how people code? I can`t fully attend yet because of lack of skills, but feel like being there will help me to move further faster from the beginner level.

It should be fine -- you can join group of 3 'pairs' to observe/participate at your level. Could you pick up a ticket on http://www.eventbrite... so we have lunch for you?
