  • Post a Greeting Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Fellow Mushroomers!

This is a friendly appeal to all field mycologists, experienced foragers and other shroomers of the Greater Philly area who would like to see this MeetUp evolve into a more organized club with an annual foray schedule and perhaps some other fun events as we grow. We are already a NAMA affiliated club, so you can join NAMA (North American Mycological Association) for the discounted fee.

The key ingredient to set things in motion is for a core group of knowledgeable shroomers to come together and plan a path forward. I'm an industrial mycologist, but a marginal field mycologist, so I really don't feel confident enough to lead forays at this point. I also live in Kennett Square which might be the "Mushroom Capital of the World" but it's probably too remote a location for a Greater Philly organizational MeetUp. One of our members, Bill Curry, has volunteered to come up with a more central meeting place in the Paoli area.

PLEASE let me hear from you if you have led forays before or have competent field identification skills. If even four field experts come forward and agree to lead two forays each, we will be well on our way! Earnest volunteers are needed as well to help out with membership and other admin tasks.

So, will you step up and become one our pioneer cofounders? This is a great opportunity to make new friends with fellow fungi fanatics and share your skills with a host of eager students. Shoot me an email with your background and how you'd like to help and I'll be delighted to coordinate a meeting if there is sufficient interest.

Best wishes and looking forward to hearing from you!

I have never been out hunting shrooms. I joined this group to learn, my problem is that I work weekends. Does anybody in the area go out on Mondays or Tuesdays who wouldn't mind my tagging along to have my first learning experience?

I joined this group because I'd love to learn about foraging. If some trips are organized, I would definitely go..

Ps I've been in John Heinz wildlife refuge and it's teeming with fruiting fungi. I'd happily meet people there Saturday the 28th-eric

I love the idea of taking samples, photos, to chart and later identify what we may not know on the spot. Would just be great to pass some knowledge and excitement around. -eric

Suzanne and all, with all this enthusiasm being expressed, maybe we should go ahead and start foraging and just using a book to ID, it being understood of course that no one is relying on the club to ID edibles. What does everyone think?

I'd love to see this MeetUp hold regular forays but my mushroom foraging knowledge is insufficient to lead. I'm a good event organizer and would be happy to help with logistics, etc.

Furthermore, I would be interested in helping organize a yearly overnight trip, with lodging and programs. I previously participated in overnight lodgings with another club in PA and have some ideas from those experiences. Please let me know if that would be helpful.

I'd love to find more mushrooms in the Philly area. Mostly in the summer I find chanterelles in New Hampshire. I've got some knowledge but not enough to lead. And I certainly wouldn't know where to go in the Philly area. But I'm intrigued with this idea

Have you tried reaching out to the local universities to find a mycologist? I would love to be more involved, but unfortunately do not have to experience to lead forays either - though I can identify a handful of edibles reliable.

I am ready to do trips and retake high quality detailed photographs of local fungi. Later, we can ID , classify and chart. What say ye?
