The Philadelphia WordPress September Meetup

Join us for the September Philadelphia WordPress Meetup happening on Sept 29th, 2010! The meetup will take place at Future Media Concepts (FMC) in downtown Philly. MEETUP PRESENTATIONS:

Beginner - Getting Started with WordPress presented by Doug Stewart

This session will cover WordPress from the ground up. We'll install WordPress, go through basic configurations, demonstrate how to install plugins and themes, and more! We'll even cover how to setup a MAMP stack on your Mac so you can install WordPress locally without the need for a server.

Advanced - WordPress Plugin Development 101 presented by Bonnie Vasko

This hands-on session will walk you through the steps to create your own plug-in. The session will cover:

  • An introduction to the Wordpress Plug-in Architecture and API
  • Wordpress Hooks: Hook into Wordpress code with actions and filters
  • Custom Admin Panels: Learn how to create and customize admin panels.

Tickets for this event cost $5. Because of the space limitations we can only fit 40 people (20 beginner / 20 advanced) so we need to charge to verify everyone that RSVPs actually shows up. All money collected will be used for future Meetups, food, giveaways, etc.

The advanced meetup was only an hour long when I thought it was supposed to go till 9pm. It was fairly quick and could have been explained a little bit slower and more in depth. I think she did a lot of prep work for it though so that was appreciated.

I had a very good time. Bonnie's presentation showed me what I need to learn to start developing plugins - I have a way to go but I will get there. I also learned, at the beginner group, how to use IRC, which I am sorry to say I have long known about but never tried.

I had a great time and learned things that I am going to use right away to get my new WordPress site going.

I think the organizers do a good job and have good intentions and I appreciate that. But you can't be all things to all people. The beginners session was dominated by questions from 1-2 people that were too specific and too advanced for beginners. I was lost and so were many whom I spoke with afterwards.

I thought it was really great. Beginner could have been a little more beginner but its always good to see the possibilities.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
