August Meetup: The Sun Also Rises

Come join us for a discussion about The Sun Also Rises by Earnest Hemingway. We will meet at Chapter House Cafe (in the basement) on 9th St. between South and Bainbridge.

We will be wrapped up by 8:30pm.

$10 Amazon.com Gift Card Give Away!--Each month, the organizer will ask a question from our reading. The person to answer correctly will win a $10 gift certificate to Amazon.com!

July's MeetUp can be found here.

Note - ***please avoid No-Shows*** -- do your best to not take up a Yes spot unless you are sure you can be there - we generally have a full house! If your RSVP changes, please update it on the site accordingly. Finishing the book is ideal but not a requirement, as we often juggle a lot in the day-to-day! We do, however, appreciate attendees attempting to complete the book, as it makes for a fuller discussion. Our talks as well as our book choices are always quite varied and enriching.

Great conversation! Does anyone know where we can find early drafts of some of Hemingway's short stories, as Charlie mentioned?

Jenny - see my comment above. the boook I referenced was The Hemingway Short Story by Robert Lamb. I have it on my kindle. For an aspiring writer it shows me that it takes more than one try to get a story right on the page.

Thanks, all! Charlie, I'm an aspiring writer too - which is why I'm particularly interested in Hemingway's revision process.

Fellow book readers - I was out of town and out of touch yesterday so I didn't have a chance to comment on the meeting. First, I always enjoy discussing good books with intelligent, thoughtful, well-spoken people. It challenges me to think a little bit harder than I normally do. That was accomplished on Wednesday evening. Second, I hope I didn't overwhelm anybody with my enthusiasm for Hemingway and the book. Usually my wife attends these meetups with me and she puts a (well-needed) governor on me that was missing the other night. Thanks for all the 'Good to see yous" I received. It was nice to meet all you fine people too. See you soon, and it's a beautiful day for reading.

Right now, Friday morning, there is an article posted by The New Yorker titled Hemingway's meta fictions in The Sun Also Rises. I enjoyed reading it, and I think some of you may too. I don't know whether it is available on the New Yorker website.

Connie - that was the other edition I mentioned at the meeting. Different beginnings and parts that were cut are revealed, along with the original characters names. It's the Hemingway Library edition by Scribners. There are pictures in the back so you can see the people who the characters were based on. I find it fascinating to see the drafts as he improved the text to get to the finished product.

I especially enjoyed hearing the observations of those who liked the book more than I did. I'm very glad I found this book club, and I hope it doesn't move from this location. Not only is the coffeehouse a pleasant place but one I can easily get to by bus at night. Thanks to you, Jonathan and Jamie, for all you do

I also enjoyed the conversation and learned more about the characters. I may just reread the book to see if I can develop some empathy for he characters.

Sorry about the late notice. I was looking forward to being there but UPS is now making an early evening delivery that requires my being at home. Next time!

The book trader on 2nd and market has cheap used mass market paper backs. I picked up a Steinbeck novel yesterday for $1.85. It's likely that they have lots of Hemingway. Also the book corner across from the whole foods near the parkway was mass market paper backs for $1. If you have time it's worth checking. I got mine on amazon for under $5 with shipping.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
