Improv exercises!

This meetup had no specific time or place for quite some time, so it's perfectly acceptable if you need to change your RSVP.

Please bring $3.00 with you to help pay for the rental space.

An example of an improv exercise:

One player becomes an imaginary machine part, making their body into the shape of that part, complete with a machine like motion and appropriate sound effect.  One at a time, subsequent players add themselves as parts, thereby expanding the machine and it's function.

I will come with a bunch of improv ideas like this, but I'd love for others to input ideas as well.  We can make the meetup's direction match our collective mood at the time.

I was one of just seven who attended this event -- and what fun it was! Matt, the organizer, and one other participant, Becky, have improv experience. The rest of us were new to it. The exercises were amusing and there were a lot of laughs. Overall, a great time!

I visited Widener Library Today at 2808 West Lehigh Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19132. There is a room that's free to use with reservation. It's a little small for 20 people, but could work for a group of 10. The problem with libraries is that they have limited hours. This particular branch closes each day by 5pm or 6pm and is closed all day Friday and Sunday. I have to submit a form to request the space, and I would request a Saturday from approx 1:30 to 4:30. There won't be a specific date set until they determine the room's availability. I'm pursuing this, but will continue to look for even better free options. Any opinions about Widener Library for Saturday afternoon?

I thought the widener library changed its policy years ago and made it open only to students of widener.

The Rotunda at 40th (, or thereabouts??) and Walnut is available on a sporadic, but non-regular basis. Contact Gina Renzi there, the director, who is very accommodating and supportive of this kind of group.

With three people on the wait list, is everyone who is RSVP'd "yes" definitely going? Please update if not.

There is now a wait list.

Is there a wait list for this event? I will definitely be there if a spot opens up.

    Thanks for that info Becky!

I'm going to start the application process for space at Merge Dance Studio in Manayunk (4047 Cresson Street Philadelphia, PA 19127).
They can accomodate our group for $15/hour. The rental cost would demand a fee from each attendee of a few bucks. Stay tuned for more developments. Sorry for my frequent posting.

Also FYI everyone, there's a monday night weekly meetup in Phoenixville for "Authentic Improv" via meetup, 7:30-9p if anyone else is interested on making the trip out here. It's a great time and it would be awesome to see it branch out into the philly area.

I've got room for 8-10 people any week night in my house :-) Though I am all the way out in Phoenixville. Just a suggestion :-)

How much do the centers charge for usage of space?

    December 22, 2012

  • Tamara

Try the Libraries. I know some of them have rooms that are big.

Maybe we can use outdoor space when the weather changes.
Maybe some progressive Unitarian/gay church would let us use their space in exchange for volunteer work or an improv show. How about someone's basement?

So far, I've emailed/called UArts and the Community College with no luck. The Kroc Center charges for group usage. Ive been calling separate facilities of Phila Parks and Recreation to see if they could let us use a space, and most of the time I left a voicemail message and never heard back. I talked to a person once at a facility who didnt think it sounded workable. I get the jist that the Parks and Rec centers are intended for children and seniors (cuz I guess the rest of us adults should be working instead of playing). All we need is an empty room. There must be one of those in this great city for us to use for free. I will keep trying. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm brainstorming for locations. Thinking perhaps a community college would let us use an empty room during a time when nothing else is scheduled, especially if pitched as a perk for their students.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
