Liederabend: An Evening of Art Song for Voice and Piano
The primary focus of the Philadelphia Lieder Society is on German Lieder from Schubert to Richard Strauss, French mélodies from Berlioz to Poulenc, and related art song repertoire in other languages (including English). The Society also features 20th and 21st century works for solo, classically-trained voice and piano (or small instrumental ensemble) written by composers working within the European classical music tradition. The Philadelphia Lieder Society does not include music from the Medieval, Renaissance or Baroque periods in its programs; nor does it present choral works, opera, operetta, American musical theater, cabaret, jazz standards, songs from the Great American Songbook, spirituals, folk songs, or contemporary popular songs.
The Philadelphia Lieder Society believes that art song is essentially chamber music for solo voice and piano (or less commonly for solo voice and small instrumental ensemble), the product of an artistic collaboration by equal partners. Membership in the Philadelphia Lieder Society is open to anyone who wishes to help the Society realize its mission and vision through the financial support of his or her gift or by contributing time or expertise.
In keeping with the Society's desire to create a convivial setting for music-making, the members of the Society invite all the performers to join them for a celebration following each performance. All Philadelphia Lieder Society performances take place indoors, without amplification, in public, secular venues with acoustics well suited to the presentation of Lieder and art song repertoire.
