March 2014 Meeting

Build a Ruby Gem - Brandon Hilkert

This talk will cover the basics of creating a Ruby gem and touch on integrations with various elements of the Rails stack. I'm writing a book on the subject, which should be out around the talk!

FactoryGirl Introduction - Michael Toppa

An introduction to FactoryGirl: FactoryGirl provides a framework and DSL for defining and using factories in your tests. We'll cover the basics of how to use FactoryGirl by reviewing real-life examples from one of my projects, which uses RSpec with FactoryGirl and Faker. I'll also review how my use of FactoryGirl helped in some ways, and hurt in others, as I learned how to design code and write tests in the Rails environment.

I've posted my slides from last night:

I added a couple slides concerning FactoryGirl's instantiation options (create, build, and build_stubbed). This has a major impact on the speed of your tests, but your options may be constrained by the design of your app.

I wanted to chime in with a note on the "major impact on speed" for older apps. If you have an app using the legacy syntax of "Factory(:model)", that's the slowest possible option (create).
