Seminar: Harry Frankfurt, Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility

At each seminar, we discuss a short philosophical text, or tackle a philosophical question. This month's text is Harry Frankfurt's paper, Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility. The text is available here:

http://people.nnu.edu/ktimpe/research/China/Frankfurt1.pdf

There is another link for those who prefer HTML to PDF, but the text on that link is not in as good a state as the text on the link above, as explained in the comments below. The HTML link is:

We want to keep these events reasonably small, so that we can keep the discussion focused, and so that everyone can participate. Please book your place by using the RSVP button. If you book and then find that you cannot make it, please cancel your booking, so that someone else can take your place.

We use the ground floor foyer of the National Theatre. We will try to be at the tables at the end furthest from Waterloo Bridge, and on the side that is furthest away from the river side of the building. If you need to ask the staff for directions, you could ask for the Shakespeare Memorial Plaque, or for the place where the Lyttleton Cloakroom used to be. (It has disappeared as part of the building works.) But we may have to be somewhere else in the foyer. We will have a notice on the table saying "Philosophy for All", but we might not be there until a few minutes before our start time of 7.45. So if you get there earlier and cannot find us, please have another wander round the foyer at 7.40 to find us. If you cannot find us anywhere on the ground floor, try the next floor up where there is a bar area, but we will only move there is there is a problem with the ground floor.

This seminar will be conducted by Richard Baron.

One of our members, John Lee, has pointed out that the original link supplied,

http://www.ucl.ac.uk/~uctytho/d... was not a good one to use. He found that the text contained several typos and, more seriously, left out a bit of the paper.

John also kindly supplied an alternative link, to a text that is in a better state. I have inserted this alternative link in the description of the event. However, that is a link to a PDF, and the link originally supplied is to an HTML page. Some of you may prefer the HTML link.

The Meetup software has again split this series of seminars, because I made a small edit to the e-mail notifications to hosts. My apologies for that. The series will continue after August, and the September date will be Wednesday 24 September. (Please ignore the reference to 23 September on the main group page.)
