THE PARADOX OF SUSPENSE, (or, SHOULD WE IGNORE SPOILER ALERTS?) If suspense requires uncertainty about how a movie or novel turns out, how can a viewer or reader who knows the outcome still feel suspense? Yet, audiences regularly report feeling suspense when reading a novel for a second time, or watching a movie they know the ending to. Why is this so?
