We are excited to have Chris Westin, senior engineer with 10gen.com (creators of MongoDB), with us to kick off the inaugural meetup.
Intro to MongoDB and the new aggregation framework
First, we'll give a brief introduction to MongoDB for folks unfamiliar with it. What is MongoDB, and what does it offer that relational databases don't? This will cover the design rationale for some of MongoDB's features such as automated failover and structured document storage. After that, we'll cover MongoDB's new Aggregation Framework. Up until now, performing queries comparable to SQL group-by functionality has required using MongoDB's built-in map/reduce feature. This works, but is more difficult than it should be for many queries. MongoDB's next release will include the new Aggregation Framework, which makes it possible to do these kinds of queries much more easily, without having to use map/reduce or write custom JavaScript. We'll describe the features of the framework, and demonstrate its use.
Chris Westin is a software engineer at 10gen, where he helps build and support MongoDB. Prior to 10gen, Chris held senior engineering positions at Yahoo! and Netflix.

I was encouraged with the initial engagement and attendance from the local community and look forward to what we'll accomplish with some time on our side on the planning front.
Many thanks to the attendees for showing up and participating.
