Lean Startup Lab - Week #1

The Lean Startup Lab will help you build and grow your business.

If you are ready to start out 2013 with a bang... and to make huge strides in your business before the end of January, you won't want to miss this weekly event.

This is the Week 1.  There will be a total of 4 consecutive Thursday night workshops, beginning today (January 10th) at 6:30.

Significant work will be done during week in between workshops... so be ready to be in full "start up" mode and willing to attend each class in order to get one-on-one time with Rick.

You will be building your business, proving out your theories and hopefully have actual revenue before the end of the month.  (fingers crossed... that's the plan)

At a minimum, you will have proof that you are building the right product or service for the right market and you will have a clear plan on how to get to revenue.

More details will be sent to those that register.

Let's make 2013, your best year yet.

In the spirit of Richard's "Giving Back" comment last night, I'm willing to volunteer time to help folks prototype their system. I have a goal of designing 52 systems this year (2 of which are in progress now.) If your idea is vetted, you know what you want to build and that there's a market demand for it, then I can sit with you to design the software and document the requirements to take you to the next step (development!) Just to align with the Lean Startup schedule, I can meet someone on week 3 in the Gangplank space to review their idea, review the process (how people use the system) and prototype the software. If you are curious about the software design process and want to witness the magic, then I'm happy to have observers. Please contact me if you are interested at [masked]. The only thing I'm looking for in exchange is to be able to list it as a project on my website and a quote regarding the experience of working with me.

Crystal, I will take you up on your offer. As you know from past conversations I have a lot of this put together already but over the next week or two we will see how much it needs to change. So, it may be less designing and more grading. Either way it would be cool :-)

That's so nice of you to offer your services! I missed last weeks' session, but I'd love to meet with you at your convenience to talk about a prototype.

I'm also a fan of fair trade, so if you need help promoting/marketing a project of your own (which is more my specialty), please let me know!

Has anyone had any experience with cell phone recorders. Looking for the cheapest/easiest way to record interviewer and interviewee.

    January 15

    • Jon Thomas

Yana, does the app you mention allow you to record both parties of a phone conversation?

There is always an option to use our group's forum. I created the "Lean Startup Lab" forum visible to group members only: http://www.startinphoenix.com/m...
This way you don't have to register in several different places. We used to have Facebook group instead of a Facebook page. We also have a dedicated group on LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/groups/...

the sponsor for the magic show would be? my company! does anyone (in our group)object to this morally? wouldnt be any legal issues with that, right?btw this post should be below the other long entry down below. ran out of space/characters on first entry

in my opinion, i would much rather see the group communicate right here on meetup.com and ditch facebook alone. i am pretty sure i am part of a small minority in the group, but just wanted to put my two cents in. it just makes sense to me to keep things narrowed down to as few websites as possible, rather than 3 or more just to follow the group. i failed quickly yesterday at starting a business. it felt great to cross something off my list. one of my ideas was to put bubble gum machines in at the phxzoo and fill them with duck feed. ive seen it at seaworld, so i called the zoo, but they told me that they actually discourage feeding the ducks withany kind of food. it makes them more aggressive, so cool! iam another step towards finding a successful business. i am also discovering that some of my ideas for businesses may be good ideas as marketing Tools for my business. for example, if one of my ideas was to become a magician, well then i could do magic shows for charity and guess who

Hi all. As requested, there is now a group/message board for us to collaborate in the virtual world. If anyone has any input feel free to drop me a line.

Just send my request to join. I thought we were going to have a Facebook group?

How about a private Google+ community? I guess not everyone is on Google+. :)

      January 12

    • Todd F.

Hi Terence, When we talked about it we realized not everyone uses Facebook (and some truly oppose it) Probably similar with Google+. The benefit of the google group is that it is also more flexible to meet our needs versus the facebook group which is somewhat limited in feature set.

Great job on this, Kyle. For anyone who hasn't seen this... make sure you check out Kyle's checklist (the link at the bottom of the post listed above). Awesome!

It was great event. Looking forward to more.

In the spirit of sharing and helping, I have contacts of software developers in India for anyone who wants to get their product developed at a very competitive price.

    • Richard

Very generous of you to offer, Kiran. Thank you. I will try an add a section on http://startupOrange.... so we can keep this and other valuable things that we all can share with our fast developing community.

awesome! i still cant shake the feeling that i shouldnt put any time and energy into my ideas though cuz they're all stupid. i really need that feeling to go away quickly! thats a personal issue of course, but hell yeah i made alot of progress toward getting the business going! im excited!

    • Madison Harrell

Andrew, your idea is valuable. Stick with it.

Andrew, I met with one of the founders of Seed Spot in Phoenix today (http://seedspot.org). They have a company in their incubator that is doing a "trading" system for people that grow fresh veggies. (ie one person has extra tomatoes does a trade with someone who has extra carrots) I don't know anything more, but you may want to connect with them and see if there are any synergies between what you want to do and what they are doing.

Keep the faith. The right things will happen.

I really enjoyed last night, and look forward to future meet ups with this group, for both the lean start up and beyond! I forgot to mention in my little pitch, you can help me out by "liking" my brewery tour's facebook page at www.facebook.com/TheAleAdventure. Also, make sure to check out my silly videos about drinking beer, I bet you'll learn something useful! ;-)

Loved meeting everyone last night! So glad Rick was able to put together this resource for us all to learn from each other. Already excited to begin my market research and bring something to the table next week!

Loved the energy in the room last night! Great group! Many of you were asking for the link to Actionplanr.com (goal planning software) so here it is: http://actionplanr.com/

In addition, I am happy to open up my experience as a "boot strapping" startup for a case study if anyone is interested. I was intentional about NOT seeking any VC funding and I am happy to share my reasons for not choosing that path.

As I mentioned last night, we "soft launched" last QT of 2012 and Users are trickling in, but now we are gearing up for a bigger campaign splash. If you are interested in seeing the process unfold let me know.

A big shout of thanks again to Rick for getting this group off the ground. I organized a Meetup group for business owners in N. Cal a few years a go and it is A LOT of work!

Anyone else having the issue of the startupOrange.com link auto redirecting to Ricks linked-in page. The link seems to work on my cell but not on my laptop. Even typing the URL manually redirects not allowing me to get to the page. Thoughts? Thanks

    • Richard

Jon, your browser cache needs to be cleared. You can try hitting CTRL and F5 simultaneously. If that doesn't work you can close your browser. And, if all else fails, you will need to reboot.

      January 10

    • Jon Thomas

Thanks, Rick. Full cache clear fixed it.

Are you expecting attendees of this event to sign up for Mixergy at $25 per month?

    January 7

    • Richard

Though, I do highly recommend you check out Mixergy.com for great interviews and content. I have no affiliation, but it is a resource I use personally.

      January 7

    • Brenda Horton

I am a Mixergy Premium member and I highly recommend anyone who is serious about their Startup to become a Mixergy member too. I am NOT an affiliate for Mixergy.

As there are as many interpretations of "lean startup" as there are startups calling themselves "lean" -- what interpretation is presented in this "lab."? (sounds more like a workshop)

    January 4

    • Bill Irvine

(It's been a while since I've been able to not eat lunch at my desk. (@@)) This is a good read: http://techcrunch.com... -- SV is a crazy reality distortion field. :P

      January 4

    • Josh Mischung

That was an excellent article Bill, thank you for sharing! I would be very interested in the opportunity to hear your thoughts on the Lean Startup process and product development.

      January 5

  • James Haupert

Can I get a better idea of the time commitment that is needed each week? What will be the deliverable? This would help me make a decision as Jan is a busy month. Thanks.

    January 3

    • Richard

Hi James. There are three components each week. 1.) there will be lean startup videos for you to review at home. 2.) action steps each week towards getting your business launched. And, 3.) the weekly meetup.

      January 3

    • Richard

Depending on what type of business you are starting, I would say a minimum of 10 to 15 hours per week, with the majority of that time being spent on action steps that will help you launch your business.
