Front-end for the Mobile Web + Ionic to Supercharge your PhoneGap apps

Join us at the great creative Mozilla Space for our PhoneGap Toronto meetup for May. We have two special guest speakers this month and we hope to see you there! If you'll be attending tweet insights on twitter with the hashtag #PhoneGapTO. Looking forward to seeing you!

7PM: Doors open

7:00 PM: Opening Remarks by Nick Van Weerdenburg, CEO at Rangle.io, organizer of the PhoneGap Toronto Meetups.

7:10 PM: Remarks by a Mozilla representative VIA Skype about their work with Adobe and PhoneGap.

7:20 PM: Shalom Aptekar, Front-End Developer at MoPals. “Tackling Front-End on the Mobile Web and PhoneGap.”

Shalom will share ways to make the front-end development process on a mobile app easier using asset management, CSS3 and Vanilla JavaScript. He will review how to make object oriented CSS for your application -  focusing on DRY coding - and show you how you can decide which framework to use. Optimizing images and icons, using SVGs, Inkscape or Illustrator and also icon fonts will be discussed, addressing each of their caveats and bonuses. He will also talk about issues with mysterious pointer-touch-mouse events and the awesome solution offered in Hammer.js. Lastly, he’ll focus on Windows Phone and the quirks and smiles that come with it.

Speaker Bio: Shalom Aptekar is a front-end developer and designer working in Toronto. He loves to play ukulele and paint and works with CSS3, ExpressJS and AngularJS when his 9 to 5 lets him. You can find him on twitter at @aktof on read his blog at aktof.ca.

8:00 PM: Varun Vachhar, Front-End Developer at Rangle.io. “Ionic: supercharge your PhoneGap app”

Ionic is a beautiful, open source framework for developing hybrid mobile apps with HTML5. Built using Cordova, AngularJS, Gulp and SASS, it provides rich, native-style UI components and interactions, and it provides APIs to build your own custom components. Varun will talk about what Ionic is and where it fits in, how to install it and start building apps. He will also address one of the biggest challenges of building HTML apps for mobile - the performance of transitions - and he’ll show some code samples of how to achieve smooth hardware-accelerated animations. Lastly, he’ll share a case study and talk about how Rangle.io is using Ionic.

Speaker Bio: Varun Vachhar is a design leader and front-end developer at rangle.io, creating amazing user experiences for mobile and web applications. He studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta and Interactive/Media/Design at the Dutch Royal Academy of Art. As a result of his diverse background and experience, he specializes in bridging the gap between design and development.

9:00 PM: End of Meetup.

We hope to see you there! And please share your PhoneGap experiences with the community: case studies, technical overviews, demos, and short talks are all appreciated.

Best wishes,
