Light Painting - Stonehenge II

This will be a Light Painting and Star workshop. Anyone wanting to learn, experience, try-it. This will be a great opportunity.

http://www.hcaf.com/foundation/stonehenge/default.htm

The Monoliths are already lit with incandescent lighting. 4 lights up lighting, strategically placed. But easily gotten around. But, we can also bring gels to put over lights and brings additional spot lights ourselves.

Once we choose a date, they will turn off their parking lot lights and give us as dark as possible. According to the Directer, the is very little ambient light anywhere close by. So should be great for Milk Way and star trails around it. It is a replica of the original Stonehenge, so it is Astronomically correct.

This is a free venue, but donations are encouraged.

Car Pooling will be highly encouraged.

What you will need:

Know your manual settings (Know the basics)

Tripod

Flashlight, Options: spotlights, gels, glow sticks, etc

Camera timer or remote flash

Sturdy shoes

bug spray

August 12 is my vote. On August 12 there is a major meteor shower: the Perseid. Somewhere between 60 and 80 per hour out of the NW. - Bit of info: Showtime usually begins as soon as the radiant (near the Double Cluster in Perseus) clears the horizon, an hour or so before midnight, and it climbs higher in the sky throughout the night. This should be a great year for the Perseids, because a fat crescent Moon should be setting just when the shower is revving up.

    http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/highlights/Meteor-Showers-in-2013-185454662.html

It's a late night on a monday - But with the Crescent Moon setting around 11:45 - just as the meteor show gets started, near the horizon so we can take advantage of the henge as foreground stuff... August 12 is my vote.

I don't mind the driving - but all I've got is a little hatchback with just enough room for 3.

      July 19, 2013

    • Jerry

I was just kidding Buddy. I think this one is going to be harder to make during the week with some people working the next day until a weekend or later in the year per Allen's suggestion. I don't know if I'll be able to or not yet.

Speaking from experience - when light-painting, or light drawing (moving the camera with stationary lights) you can kill ambient light - including the moon with the right settings (F11+) I've been having fun with light-drawing and light painting lately.

These were taken right next to 183 - middle of north Austin. http://dragoluna.blogspot.com/2013/03/i-love-light-long-exposure-at-carnival.html

Impromptu - Mostly hand held and tons of fun. Some of these are simply messes of colorful lines but there are a few that really popped. The well-lit upper deck of 183 was *right* behind the ferris wheel - and you cannot see it. Of course - a carny light-show is pretty bright and that helps a lot - but regardless... the right settings and glowing things right in front of the camera and you don't have to worry about the sky.

Also - if we can settle on a date soon, I might be able to find some fire-dancers to join us.

    July 19, 2013

  • Chris Davis C.

    Sounds great if I can. I'm out of town 8/5 - 8/16

    July 18, 2013

  • Allen R.

Sounds fun but I'd only be able to do this on a Friday or Saturday night. I'd think later in the year like Sept or Oct so it's cooler and gets dark earlier.

I'm up for carpooling and helping with gas depending on date of course. Would be prohibitive to take my old truck at the mileage I get with it. I have a Energizer strike force with red, blue, green, and UV but would probably need a lot bigger colored spot for that size of area. Anyway it would be educational to me cause I'm not experienced with light painting.

WE can always set this for September, after their play season and choose a weekend...

    July 18, 2013

good rule of thumb for moonrise times is this.
at the full moon the moon rises as the sun sets and sets as it rises. every day past full the moon will rise 45 minutes -1 hour later so a week or so or after full its not rising until 1-2am
for example the full moon is august 20th. moonrise is at 7:45
bu august 278h the moonrise is 12:30am
august 1st moonrise is 2:30 am
    july 29th moonrise is 12:30

Thanks Jeff, but I think the Milky Way hits us about midnight.....so we don't want the moon to high and bright

      July 18, 2013

  • Tricia

Tentative yes depending on the date.

august 5th which alex mentioned the moon will set before the sun does (7:30)

august 12th moonset is 11:40 at night

    July 17, 2013

  • TA B.

I'm available for evenings of the 6,7,8 of August. If need be, we can make this later in the month, I'm just trying for around little or no moon light to interfere

    July 17, 2013

    • Alex B.

The 6th would work best for me as I have to fly in from the SF Bay Area. The 7th would work too. The 8th might not work as I might get to shoot the Broncos-49ers Pre-season game. Btw, is this place closed to the public? Milky Way shots probably won't happen until after midnight. If I can't make the date selected, I would like to try shooting MW on a weekend when everybody has left.

      July 17, 2013

  • TA B.

My apologies...It is not available Friday, Saturday or Sunday in the Month of August. Due to plays in production. However, we are only 2.5 hours away, the sunset is about 8:40 pm, so there is plenty of time during the week.
