The Austin Rodeo

The Austin Rodeo is coming up on March 1 - 16th. Last year we went and had a great time. I remember Tracy had a little lesson on doing Night or Long Exposure Photography. I prefer to go on a weekday night because the buses run later, but if the club decides to go on a weekend maybe I can go, get pictures and post them to the site.

this will be as previous years we will meet as a group and learn long and night exposures for the rides. We can stay as a group I or split up

It's always fun and way too many things to photograph in one visit

Tripods, cable or remote release ( or use your timer) sturdy comfy shoes for walking. There is allot of it. Know your manual settings if at all possible for the long exposures

Everyone is welcome

Thank you to everyone...love all the shots. And that is the neatest thing about long exposure at any Carnival....every one of them is different and unique!

I had a blast. It was great getting together with other photographers renewing acquaintances and meeting people that I have not met before. Tracy did a great job explaining how to get great shots. I think I have a bunch of photos to process.

I ended up with tickets to the Rodeo, so I didn't have my tripod for long exposures. Everyone has posted some amazing shots!

I will be getting there right at 6 pm (coming from Leander and I work until 5). We will meet under the Ferris Wheel between[masked] pm. Those wanting to get in FREE, be sure to follow Dewy's directions. we will be meeting there at 6 pm.

We will gather, go over a few things. Be sure to click on link below, to give you an idea what we will be doing tomorrow night. I will be shooting with digital and iPhone both.

If you have any filters, bring them. This is a great time to use them. I have star, kaleidoscope, and a couple of others.

We can stick together or disburse onto your own. Whatever you are comfortable with...

Don't forget, it's not just the rides, it's also the mid-way, interiors of buildings with their 'Wares' and much much more.

Shooting the carnival rides last night was lots of fun, blue hour and after dark. I only focused on the rides last night, I didn't shoot the shows or live stock area this year. Most members shot full manual, I used Av mode and used my f-stop and ev settings to control the shutter speed. Definitely you'll need a tripod for this. Shutter speeds between 2 and 20 seconds were working for me. Above 20 seconds the colored lights turned white. I found myself shooting f11 to f22 most of the night, f8 here and there at ISO 100. I used my 18-55mm (27-82 EFL) lens all night. A little wider would be good too.

I also used my 18-55mm. I started out with shutter speeds between 10 to 20 seconds. Virgilio suggested 6 seconds for one ride, so I switched and found 5 to 10 seconds working great for most shots. I also shot at f11 to f22...even went up to f25 on a few. I learned a lot!

I had a great time last night. We had 5 members there that I found while shooting. Tricia was still there when I left at 10, she's hard core! In case anyone is interested, The Temptations are playing the Rodeo Arena at 7 PM this Thursday. Tickets for the concert are extra. I saw Dewey and talked with him last night, he will be able to get the Thursday night meetup group into the fairgrounds without paying the $8 admission fee. Meet him at the BBQ cook off area. Enter and park at gate 3 off Decker Lake Road.

I had a great time! Thanks for getting me over to the ferris wheel! Every shot had a different pattern. So fun!

According to TPE, sunset should be about 6:30 P.M. My thought is to arrive at the Ferris Wheel at 6:00 P.M. That way those that arrive later will be able to find us and people will have plenty of time to set their gear up and take "test shots" before the sun actually goes down.

As I noted earlier, I need to leave about 8:15 to catch the bus so I can get home. According to Allen, Tracy has done this for a number of years. This is my second time of doing it, though I enjoy doing night photography. Also, I would suggest that people read the blog that is linked below from Michael Connell about what is involved in shooting carnivals. It will give you a lot of good ideas and if you did not go last year, help you to understand some of the techniques involved in a shoot like this.

The most important part is that you have fun and post your pictures so we all can enjoy the fun you had.

The address should be 7311 Decker lane ?

    February 17, 2014

    • Allen R.

That's a more accurate address for the Travis County Expo Center. Last year from 183 I took Loyola Lane and entered the fair parking lot from that street, I never got on Decker Lane. The BBQ area is near those south parking lots and I'm guessing that is where Dewey will want everyone to meet.

For those of you heading to Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, I found a nice blog on carnival ride photography by one of our meetup members.

Doesn't look like I can make it on this Thursday due to a schedule conflict. Anyone interested on going Saturday March 1?

Rodeo austin is more than just a rodeo. This meetup is to photograph the grounds and carnival areas only. If you choose to go to the Rodeo.... Then no you are not suppose to bring in cameras. I know some took shots last year of the rodeo. But they didn't come out to well with the lighting and where the seats are compared to getting good arena shots

And Dewey is making arrangements to get us in to the grounds not the Rodeo itself

Blue hour shots of the rides are my favorite for the Rodeo Meetups!

I just found out that I can get you into the carnival/fairground area through the BBQ Cook-Off area. I will put together a diagram/map on where to meet at the BBQ Cook-Off gate so we can all enter together as a group. As Tracy said I can get you onto the grounds but not into the Rodeo Arena where the Rodeo takes place.

    1 · February 5, 2014

Parking is $10 per vehicle...I think some folks may have car pooled out there last year. A fairground ticket is $8 per person if you go through the fairground gate.

Does anyone anticipate having this issue in the upcoming meet. DSLRs yes or no?

    February 4, 2014

    • George

At the rodeo itself it is very possible. Mingxiang said it was on the back of the ticket. If you look up the website, you might be able to contact them and ask. As far as I know, you are free to roam the grounds, just not take the camera into the rodeo. A better person to ask on that is Dewy Brooks. He must be associated with the grounds some way as he was saying that he would get back to the group about getting into the grounds, but not the parking.

      February 4, 2014

  • Mingxiang Z.

Hi my friends, I went to the Rodeo to shoot for the past 3 years and had great fun there but last year one staff stopped me and said "the DSLRs were not allowed to be used in the arena". And later I found this regulation was printed at the back of the ticket although no check point for cameras or lenses at the entrance.
So they have the rule, just not execute it as strictly as in NBA ^^

      Mingxiang,

Mingxiang, most of us hung around the carnival part of the rodeo. Personally, I never did find the rodeo part. I did find the petting zoo and the back area. I am sorry you were disappointed about the no DSLR rule. I have run into that myself on some other venues.

Folks will still have to pay for parking, but I should be able to get everyone that comes onto the fairgrounds. I'll get back to everyone with details.

Love the rodeo but will be headed for NY that day. Have fun!

Yes! I'm so in for shooting the rodeo. I love shooting action!

    February 3, 2014

Dewey was able to get us in last year, and the long exposures are a blast, not too mention everything else at the Fair grounds...
