4th of July at Forsythe NWR (rescheduled to 7/5/2014)

Activity seems to be picking up at Forsythe now that summer is getting underway. Osprey chicks are on the nests and Black Skimmers are back. I'd imagine Blue Grosbeaks will be making appearances too soon.  In honor of it being the 4th of July, the first person who gets a picture of a Bald Eagle that morning will win a $20 cash prize.

We will meet at the observation tower at the Gull Pond turn-around.  To find the tower, go past the visitor center and down the hill.  Pass the boardwalk on your right and continue down the road.  You will see the gated enterence to Wildlife Drive on your right.  Drive past the gate and continue going straight down the road until it ends at a circle.  You will see a large observation tower in the center of that circle.  That is where we meet for all Forsythe Meetups. (GPS[masked], [masked]).

The Green Head Flies are beginning to appear so make sure you bring insect repellent

    Hi Bill,
I had a great time on the photo event. Thanks for taking me around Forsythe.
When I exited, a good sized deer jolted across the road! I took your advice, and stopped at the OC bridge to see the yellow crested heron babies....lots of them. I met a lady there who was a photographer of birds. I hope you don't mind, that I gave your email to that lady because she was interested in your group!
    thanks again,

That's fine Diane. People can also do a search on meetup for "Forsythe". I don't think there is any other meetup group with that name in it's title. Yes the OC bridge is a great place for birds.

Can anyone suggest the best insect repellent?

I try to find sprays that do not have the chemical - DEET - in it. that stuff will be absorbed through your pores and it is considered hazardous. There is a product, called BULL FROG, that advertises that it is DEET FREE and has a SPF 30 rating. CUTTER ADVANCED has as their main ingredient a thing called Picaridin and there is no mention of DEET in the ingredients.

Use anything with at least a minimum of 20 percent Picaridin. It works as good as any DEET based repellent I have used. I use Sawyer's Insect Repellent with 20 percent Picaridin. You can get it at Dick's Sports or REI. It works real good on Greenheads. I have had 20-30 of them crawling all over the inside of my truck, but not one will land on me. The Sawyer brand has a nice citrus smell too that vanishes in about 10 minutes.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
