Tall Ships Festival Meetup

Once again you have a chance to photograph tall ships as they arrive for the annual Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point Harbor. The best pictures are taken from one of the boat rides available or from the jetty just past the Ocean Institute where you will need a 200mm lens. Bring the kids because they have all sorts of activities for them.

Great weather with beautiful clouds in the sky to show off the tall ships.

I'm new to this event. According to this http://www.orangecountycoastlife.com/events/dp-tall-ships-festival.html the parade of tall ships starts at sunset. Is it better to come in the evening for the ships and warm light instead of midmorning?

A 105mm lens will be fine. It is more of an issue how close the baot gets to the Tall Ship. The captains want to get close but not too colse that they block the viwe for others. Go for it.

Patricia, from someone who has sailed on these ships I can tell you that there is not enough room on the ship during a battle sail to use a tripod. There are too many people and lots of jostling about. There is certainly space on the docks but not the boats

Thanks Jesse. I guess I'll bring sea sick pills instead. He he.

Sorry, I just read your answer about the boat ride. But I still want to know if I should bring my tripod.

Will I be able to get a ticket for a boat ride when I come on Sat. or is it best to purchase on line? I've never photographed from a boat. Do I need a tripod?

Haw do you get ticket for the boat ride?Is there any meeting scheduled somewhere, who would like to go?
Do you know haw much are the tickets?

Boat tickets are available at Dana Pride boat dock in Dana Point Harbor. I don't know how much they are but you can check online. I will have a booth at the Art Show just down from Harpoon Henry's that usually serves as a meeting place. I'll probably have maps and info about the festival there. Also, check online.
