About the Travel in Travel Photography with Ralph Velasco

Photography instructor, author and international tour guide Ralph Velasco talks about researching, preparing for and successfully embarking on a trip that focuses on photography. He’ll explain his system for image storage and backup, along with a series of powerful tips for creating a well-rounded set of photographs that truly captures the essence of a place and tells a complete story. Ralph will also discuss a variety of gear and packing tips, as well as how to stay connected on the road, and he’ll be featuring images from his 35-day assignment to shoot for a cookbook on the regional cuisine of Mexico.

about the instructor:

Travel photography instructor, author and international tour guide Ralph Velasco has organized and led cultural photo tours around the world which have included Egypt, México’s Copper Canyon, Central Europe, Morocco, Spain, Death Valley, Chicago and San Francisco. Additionally, as of this writing he’s organized eight fully-licensed People-to-People programs to Cuba.

His current book is Ralph Velasco On Travel Photography: 101 Tips for Developing Your Photographic Eye & More and in it he discusses photography and travel tips and tricks he’s learned from the road, as well as provides over 100 sample images and interesting quotes. His next book is scheduled for release soon and will be titled Essence of a Place: A Photographer’s Guide to Using a Shot List for Capturing Any Destination.

As creator of the My Shot Lists for Travel app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch®, Ralph has taken the age-old concept of maintaining a shot list and brought it into the 21st century. Designed to help all travelers to bring back a more well-rounded set of images from any destination, the app is a powerful organizational tool, no matter the user’s photography skills or type of camera used.

Two years in a row Ralph was awarded “Photographer of the Year - Open Category” by the Professional Photographers of Orange County, California, and he’s Founder/Lead Instructor of The Photography Boot Camp. Consumer advocate and National Geographic Traveler columnist Christopher Elliott selected his blog (RalphVelasco.com) “One of the 11 best new travel blogs of 2011,” which was also selected one of the Best Travel Blogs of 2012 by Washington Flyer.

Ralph has taught travel photography classes at the University of California at Irvine Extension Program, Saddleback College, Santa Ana College, Julia Dean Photography Workshops and REI Outdoor School, among others. He’s a regular speaker at the Orange County Fair, the Travel & Adventure Shows, and in 2011 was among a select group of travel bloggers asked to speak at the IOETI eMarketing and eTourism conference in Cairo, Egypt.

It was a great presentation on a subject we all do. Had the timing been different, I would have planned my trip back east different. I purchased the app after I saw Ralph at a SCPC meeting @ Calumet. This was a great refresher and I moved it to the first page of my iPhone.
