Night Photography at and near the capitol

This is Lady Forward:

We'll take pictures similar to this one:

You'll need a star filter to get one just like this with the points of light coming off the lights, or you can simulate this with a very narrow aperture.

Bring a tripod, unless you want to get creative with abstract photos.

Don't worry if you haven't done this before, I'll spend time doing demos and giving advice.

I thought I didn't know much about night shooting. I was wrong. I don't know ANYTHING about night shooting :(

    Great to see everyone!

My poor wife and I lugged around all that heavy equipment, wrong lens, ridiculous overkill in technology, inadequate skill in using that technology om that environment and what shots did I upload? The ones from the tiny Fuji.

      And great shots they are!

I used the level on my tripod as well as the virtual level in my camera. I have shots from in front of Lady Forward. You can plainly see that the steps are level, but the Capitol is tilted. What's up with that?

This was great. We had a good turnout. I felt I accomplished something as I was able to offer tips and advise to several people. It was a lot of fun. And, I got a lot of shots that I like. I'm also glad the Overpass Light Brigade was there. I got some shots as they were walking and it made some very interesting photos as well.

Bill thanks for all your help! You were quite busy helping people and it was greatly appreciated. I got some great photo's because of your help!

Thanks Bonnie, you deserve credit for some innovative techniques. Your lenses also helped to accomplish that.

Having never done this before... how will this work? Do we travel around in groups of a few people? All on our own? I for one would rather be with some people as I'll be walking around with some expensive toys. Madison isn't what it used to be.

I underestimated how tired I would be on Friday night after a week of work :-( Not going to make it to this event after all. Have a good evening of shooting everyone!

Bill one suggestion...before the event if we could post some sample pictures that will be great ..attendees could learn about what time will be best, how should the sky look like, how to avoid distracting likes etc from these sample pictures

Just search on you tube as Kris suggested.

Thanks Bill...I found what I was looking for http://www.adobe.com/... For digital night photography we just need to be aware of the high ISO noise level, star effect, glare and depth of field.

I'm going to try and be there.

We will be meeting near the statue above. It is on the corner of State Street and W. Mifflin and N. Carroll. It's hard to predict where we'll end up spending most of our time. I plan to walk around the capitol building first and shoot from that vantage point, especially some of the glass buildings. The picture above was shot from near Monona Terrace. We may venture on to State Street as well. I'll try to keep us together so it should be easier to find us.

Sorry, I can't make it now. I totally forgot about this when my friends said they wanted to take me out for my birthday. Have fun!

For this type of shooting, is it better to bring a fast prime lens, or a slower zoom lens, or does it matter?

    August 8, 2013

    • Alfredo

Sorry, I press the return key - you should read about the NR function on your manual and do as it says. here is a review: http://www.dpreview.c...

Thanks for the replies! I'll probably bring both lenses --

  • Alfredo

Bill, where do you plan to spend most of the time, Capitol area?

    August 8, 2013

I am going to Dane Dances first then I will try to find you.

suggestion to folks: if you do not have a star filter, you can get a similar (albeit less controlled) effect by closing the aperture to 13 and above.

  • Bonnie

I plan to come unless I don't have an appropriate lens. I was on vacation last week and my versatile[masked] broke. :-( Do you think a 50mm will work for a photo like this? My only other lens with a tripod mount is a 10-20mm.

    August 5, 2013

    • Bonnie

      Oh I bet thr 10-20 doesn't hsve a tripod mount. I'll bring the 50mm. Course I did just see a used 17-70mm f2.8-4 ....... :-)

      August 7, 2013

    • Bill

Bring them both Bonnie. I'd like to see them, besides, a 10 -20 should be light enough to be able to mount the camera on the tripod with the lens attached.

Hi! I was wondering if someone can recommend a good tutorial on night photography, as I haven't done much of it (though I did see the note about demos). I have a Nikon D3100 if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Lee Frost had a book on the subject. I would recommend just paging through a few books on the matter at a bookstore. Or borrow a few from the library. Don't think there is one perfect book, but many have good pointers.

I'm interested in this event, but it conflicts with Dane Dances at Monona Terrace. Would you consider changing the date?
