Have a cosplay photo shoot!

Cosplay is short for "costume play", is an activity in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea from a work of fiction. There are many costumers in Madison who spend hours making their own movie quality costumes, and enjoy wearing them at conventions (myself, my wife and friends included). Unfortunately there aren't many opportunities for professional quality photographs so I've organized this event for both photographers and costumers to get some awesome photos of movie accurate movie, TV-show and Japanese anime costumes (Star Wars, Doctor Who, Naruto, just to name some).

I reserved full Archer Room downstairs in Middleton Library for this photo shoot.

Perry Kivolowitz has graciously volunteered to let us use his backdrop for the photo shoot.  If you're coming in costume a great way to show your appreciation would be bring few bucks to donate and help get the backdrop cleaned after.

Parking: There is a lot across the street and parking next to the library

Some of us are wondering if we could have a portrait photo meetup. Members who want to practice taking portraits would take portraits of members who pose. Similar to the cosplay event but no costumes. We would need studio lighting and backdrops. If any of you supplied them for the cosplay event are willing to do it again, let me know or post in the "volunteer at help portrait?" event here:

I would do it with my studio lights but I won't volunteer to provide prints. My time is as far as I'm willing to go.

My friend (ranger, Mass Effect, Kaylee) had a great time, and absolutely loves everyone's pictures. She wants to post some of them, but wants to make sure she credits everyone appropriately. How do Perry, Adam, Kristian, and Kevin want to be named in their pictures?

Isn't there a "con" kind of thing? If the "con" gave us some space, I bet some members of the photo meetup would come to capture cosplay goodness. Would a cosplayer check into this for us?

I don't think there will be any conventions until spring. At least in Madison. The last con I went to there were lots of peopke just going around taking pictures. I'm not sure if you have or can set something official up. We'll have to look into it for the next one.

I learned three things today. Cosplay is fun. Take a white balance even if somebody is rushing you. Adobe's support of Fuji cameras is lacking (corollary: don't sell the Nikons just yet). Four things... Adam is a killer photographer.

    • Zach W.

I check with the library and we can't get in before 1pm to set up early. Just FYI

      September 21, 2013

  • Zach W.

Good news everyone - I was able to reserve the whole room at the library so we will have plenty of space. I have Perry Kivolowitz, Kristian DiPersio, jiju, and Alfredo bringing their own setups, so we could have 4 costumers getting photos at once, correct?

    September 18, 2013

    • Kristian D.

I don't know if I will have a setup. My lights may be out of town this weekend for an event.

@Kristian - as I mentioned I will have two commands so you (and others) can shoot along side me. I'll be happy to explain all to all to the degree of my ability. Don't tell anyone but the Einsteins make things very very easy.

      September 18, 2013

@Perry I will definitely appreciate the assistance, I know about PC's but still have a lot to learn about camera equipment. I will try to get the whole room again so that we will have more space.

Sounds great, but what do the photographers have to dress up as?

    1 · August 28, 2013

    • Zach W.

They don't have to wear a costume unless they want to, but they're certainly welcome to dress up too! Everyone should get in on the fun both ends of the camera.

      September 17, 2013

  • Zach W.

Perry I've been thinking about the chroma key blue vs standard backdrop. What if costumers have a similar shade of blue on their costume, will it disappear into the background?

Zach has asked me to consider bringing studio lighting. If this works out I will be happy to explain every step to meetup members and, if your camera is compatible with my radio gear, give turns taking shots with the lights. I know the radio gear is compatible with Nikon DSLRs. I don't know about Canon / other.

I have two transmitter / triggers so who ever is giving it a try won't interfere.

This hasn't been worked out yet.

    August 29, 2013

    • jiju

Perry, the radio gear for Nikon is normally not compatible with Canon. Gear manufacturers are forced to make two kinds because of this.

      September 16, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

The studio lights are generic - the radios I have for off camera strobe are Nikon specific. I've tested the first type on a Fuji mirrorless and found they will be fine up 160th / second (I actually tested at 125 but read 160).

      September 16, 2013

There are some sci-fi geared meetup groups in town that may have members who would like to dress up in costume and have their photos taken. Do you want to post this in their meetup groups, or should I?

      September 9, 2013

Verified my studio lights radio triggers work with non-Nikon cameras up to at least 1/125 on my Fuji X-E1. I have two triggers so will be able to pass one around.

@Adam - I have a backdrop stand with a black and a blue backdrop. I have never used the chromakey blue but it could be useful to the subjects (so they can put themselves where ever they want).

    I hope more members come!

    September 14, 2013

    • Zach W.

That's great to hear Perry. It would be great if we had someone there with a computer who could photo shop in suitable backgrounds on the spot. Another thought is where will the photos be available after?

      September 14, 2013

I can upload full resolution images to Dropbox in a public folder. This makes for easy bulk downloading. I just bought an EyeFI card which could beam files to a PC as they are taken. I have no experience with it though. I don't have a laptop with Photoshop unfortunately. Note that there is more to shooting quality chromakey-able images than standing in front of a blue sheet :) As I said, I've never done it (I just wrie the software that pulls the key :)
