Star and Milky Way Photography

  • Indian Lake County Park

8183 Highway 19, Cross Plains, WI (map)

    43.195690 -89.620575

  • We will meet at 7:00 pm at the Middleton Park and Ride. http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/parkride/lots/dan1309.htm
  • Come learn how to photograph the stars and Milky Way, both as static images and as long swirling trails of moving light. The sun sets before 5 pm (eep!), and it is the weekend of the new moon, so there should be a minimum of other lights in the sky.

We will meet at 7 pm in the Middleton Park and Ride and then leave for Indian Lake County Park by 7:10 pm. From there, we will head down the west trail towards the lake. Bring a tripod and remote shutter release for best results. (Be sure to also dress warmly for the weather and considering bringing a small flashlight or headlamp. It would be ideal if it has a 'red light' setting to avoid bright lights getting into other peoples' pictures.)

Clear, cloud-free skies are a must. If the sky is overcast or raining, we will reschedule for Sunday night (Nov. 3rd). I will post a final decision to the meetup by 6 pm at the latest on Friday if we need to reschedule.

I was just outside, south of Madison and it was pretty cloudy.....I'm guessing tonight is another no-go?

Shoot. (not photos, eh?) I can't come Monday night.

    I can come Monday!

Alright, looks like tonight is another bust. Re-edited the Meet Up for Monday to try again.

We have cloud cover right now at Indian Lake. They haven't moved much since about 3:00.

Hey guys I won't be able to make the Sunday time. But I would still love to do this another time! Hope we can schedule another one!

I am going to drive up a little early and see if I can't catch some twilight. I'm going to the vista on the east side of the lake looking west. If someone can post here once you have arrived, I'll come meet up with you all.

I am here now. Been here for a while scoping things out.

Are we still meeting at 7 at the Middleton Park and Ride?

    November 3, 2013

    • Robert

I'll be there - have room for 3; 4 if they are friendly.

      November 3, 2013

    • Katie M.

Yes to the park and ride, but I'm going to wait to see what the clouds look like around 5:30 pm before making a final call. Forecasts are not promising ...

      November 3, 2013

  • Stacey M.

It looks like the cloud coverage at 8pm will be about 40% according to NOAA.gov. Is this still a go???

    November 3, 2013

  • Ryan E.

If people have a head lamp or flashlight, bring it as it will make looking through your bag or camera buttons much easier. Sunset is now at 4:48PM, so it will be pitch dark when you get there at 7. I will be driving myself to the park though in case I need to leave or end up staying longer than others.

Hoping the weather cooperates! Here's some details on star trails from my blog, if you want to read up beforehand: http://www.boostyourphotography.com/2013/07/stacking-star-trails.html

It seems Sunday may have a better chance of a clear evening. I hope I can make it out this day.

Looks like tonight is a 'no go' for stars. I have rescheduled for Sunday night. The time change means that it will be even darker by 7 pm, at least.

If someone is willing to organize and help advise for an attempt tomorrow (Sat.) night, please let us all know in the comments, otherwise I hope we will have better luck on Sunday!

I am seeing Clouds and Showers later from 9pm in today's weather forecast as per weather.com. Do we still have it on for today?

    November 1, 2013

  • Stephanie W.

I''ll be there tonight - my f stop only goes to 3.5, but any practice will help me be a better photographer. Hopefully no rain!

    Hi,

I am a novice in photography, can someone help me understand the equipment I need for this session

I have Nikon D7000, Lenses: 50mm Prime Lens and[masked]mm zoom. Would I need any other Lens?

I would bring a tripod and remote shutter release. On the timing - do we know what time are we targeting to end the meet up? Just for my planning.

    Thanks,
    Chandra

I've been told there is light pollution up the nose there, has anyone shot there before?

    October 30, 2013

    • Katie M.

Hi Maria, it's not an ideal location, but you can see decent stars up there. Getting truly 'dark skies' around Madison requires driving at least an hour, so it's a compromise location to try it out. Should work for star trails even if the Milky Way isn't ideal. If there is enough interest, maybe we can schedule a longer star-road-trip for another new moon.
