Outdoor Holiday Portraits

There was a suggestion in the discussion boards to do a portrait meetup, and since it is the season for photos for holiday cards and gifts, let's do it!

There is a park on the western edge of town with a little wild area that makes for nice portraits (see here) and a playground that makes nice for keeping little ones occupied. ;-) The forecast (for now) looks clear on the weekend, so hopefully we'll get some beautiful golden hour light to work with!

So dress yourself, your loved ones, your pet or your favorite teddy bear in cozy coats, stripey scarves, woolen mittens and cute hats. Then let's meetup and help each other take some great share-worthy portraits for the holidays!

Huge bonus points to whoever has access to or can acquire a free funky sofa and a truck or minivan to transport it to our location.

For some ideas on what to wear and how to coordinate the whole family, click here. This is a great opportunity to use the color principles we learned about at the last monthly meeting too. For some posing ideas to get us started, read this.

Would anyone like to do this again before the holidays?

If anybody is interested in getting some portraits, I can take some portrait photographs for them. If anybody could provide lighting that will be appreciated. Or I have two flashes which I can manage for not so great shots.

I would love to take part in something like this. Will there be more of these?

Are you looking for indoor or outdoor location? For indoor we need a location. Here is a discussion:

Kris, I'll need to see if the next locations works for me (I have a disability). The library may not work for me, but I'll find out. If it doesn't, I'd still welcome the chance to meet with some of the members and do some photos soon.

OK i'll be there for a short while just to get a feel for what it , because it's two houses down the street for me. But I don't have anyone to photograph today, even though I'd love to photograph my dog. I don't think I can make him listen to me. :-)

last minute suggestion on cold hands. I like to wear thin gloves with hand warmers slipped inside on the palms. A bit funny feeling at first, but an easy decision as opposed to numb hands.

Unfortunately, I'm still dealing with my brakes on my car. I won't be able to make this. Gotta love teenagers with heavy feet. Hope everyone takes some awesome pictures.

I'm out, cranky baby day :( Have fun guys and stay warm!

There's no reason to let the cold deter us tomorrow--I NEED a holiday family portrait! :-) But do dress in layers. I went to the outdoor architecture meetup today and wore tights under my trousers which helped a lot. If you haven't unpacked your cuddl duds yet, now is the time. And did you know that Land's End makes flannel lined jeans? http://www.landsend.com/products/mens-traditional-fit-flannel-lined-cargo-pants/id_249332. See you tomorrow!

That's right, the idea is to take photos of each other. Photos that we can use in holiday photo cards or gifts. I know I have few images with me in them! :-) It will be cold, that's true. Next time maybe we can organize something indoors but we would need a location and someone with lighting gear. Pls feel free to add ideas to the discussion boards! Otherwise hope to see you on Sun!

good question david....i think they will just be taking photos of each other.
i am shooting at heartland farm sanctuary on saturday and will judge my level of 'freezing my butt off" there to decide if i can do sunday or not. i am not a cold weather lover AT ALL :(

Who is the group taking pictures of?

    November 20, 2013

The forecast is mostly sunny but cold. So dress yourself and others warmly. We'll try to work as quickly as we can. Also check out this post on using your camera in the cold. http://www.ritzcamera.com/static/articles/tips/winter-photo.html

I going to try to make this. Life with a newborn is sooooo easy and fuuuuuun (sarcasm alert) so if he's good, I'll be there (alone). It's been awhile since I've shot a portrait session so I'd love to just focus on camera work this time :)

I'm going to hijack this for a second as well to see if anyone here is interested in coming into MATC(east side) this Wednesday morning to let me take a few basic couples portraits in our studio. I'd give you copies of the file(s). I posted this in the discussion page, but not sure how much people check that. Message me if you'd like to come on in & check it out!

I need to work on my posing/outdoor portraits so this would be great to practice. I'll bring along my my large reflector for people to play with & possibly try some off camera flash too. Sorry I have no access to props.

How about a old fashion wooden rocking chair that could be decorated with ribbons and holiday cushion. Don't have the cushion but if someone does I could supply the rocker.

    November 18, 2013

    • Kris H.

That's a great idea, Linda! And as a posing prop it wouldn't have to be decorated, just the beautiful wood and that shape could look great.

kris, i don't think i can make this event, but wanted to send out a few reminders. noses and cheeks get red quickly this time of year and eyes can get watery from the cold air....so everyone has to move quickly if you want to avoid that from happening. hand warmers/foot warmers are a really good idea and this is the time of year where hats can actually look really cute. don't forget quilts. quilts or really cool blankets to sit on or wrap everyone up in are also perfect to have on hand.

    • Kris H.

      Thanks for the tips, Beth!
