June Monthly Meeting

Let's talk about what makes a beautiful picture! Join us in Room A/B on the 2nd floor of the Fitchburg library for our June monthly meeting.

Topic Presentation and Discussion:

Lines, point of view, and triangles, these are some elements of composition that can make for dramatic and compelling images. Co-organizer Steven, who is a former instructor and designer, will talk about these dimensions and how to work with them in your photos.

Bonus tip: This will be a very interactive learning session. Please bring a basic camera, a smartphone or a point & shoot. If you have a bright flashlight, please bring it it will be part of the fun!

"Pick Three" Member Slideshow:

But before we get to the presentation, we'll run thru our "Pick Three" slideshow of pictures from members like you!

About a week before the meeting, you will be asked to submit up to 3 photos to share with the group (please keep it PG-13). You'll have an opportunity to introduce yourself and talk a little about your photos. Don't worry, this is not a public critique. We're a friendly group who loves to look at and talk about photos as much as you do. And don't be shy, even if this is your first meeting--we want to see your photos!

YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS MEETING: For the June monthly meeting slideshow, your challenge is to work with shutter speed in your images. At the May meeting, co-organizer Bill talked about shutter speed techniques to blur fast-moving water or to capture light trails to stunning effect. You can also use shutter speed to freeze fast motion or to convey movement.

Please upload your images to our Flickr group and tag them "June2014Meeting."

After-Party:

Sometimes we continue the discussion over coffee or drinks nearby.

Let's meet at the Atomic Koi Lounge, at the corner of Fish Hatchery and Lacy Road--2685 Research Park Drive. If you can't make the meeting, feel free to meet us at the lounge around 8:30 pm. (Thursdays at the Atomic Koi offer $1 off all rails, taps, wines 8:00-Midnite.)

Monthly meetings are the heart of our Meetup group. They are held on the first Thursday of the month. We don't take photos at this meeting, but we share our favorite shots from the last month and learn a new technique to work on for the next month. The topic discussed at the monthly meeting then becomes your homework for the member slideshow at the next monthly meeting.

So join us! Meet people who share your love for photography, learn something new, and make some new friends!

I don't know of any individual one-on-one coaching, but I do know there are classes in Lightroom at Madison College.

I'm also looking for some one on one coaching for lighting/flash. I would like to be able to set a scene in my head and know exactly how to light it. Marla, let me know if you find someone.

I enjoyed this meeting very much. Even though I was exhausted from work. I almost cancelled, so glad I did not. This was my first monthly meeting. Verona is too far for me during the week. I hope the group continues to have more meetings in Fitchburg.

Also - would it be possible for some of the main points of the presentation to be put in the meetup description after the meeting? Or related links? Then I could get a least an idea of what I missed!

I am excited about all the people attending this month's meeting for the first time. Just a reminder to everyone attending, bring a camera with you - if you have a camera in your phone that will work just great. Be prepared to be challenged and to have some FUN!!!

I may have missed it, but did we discuss a topic for photos for our June meeting or is an anything goes? Thanks, Cheryl

    • Bill

The topic for the following month is always the subject of the previous month, in this case, shutter speed for effect.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
