September Monthly Meeting (with guest speaker Don Mendenhall)

Come hear Don Mendenhall our special guest speaker for our September monthly meeting. Don is a photographer, writer, HR expert and life coach. He will talk about finding your personal style in your photography work.

Topic Presentation and Discussion:

His last presentation to our group in 2012 was one of our best attended and most interesting meetings. Get ready to take your photography beyond the technical to the artistic. As Don says, "many photographers whether they are novices, amateurs, or professionals do a great deal of self-study as they grow in their desire to make better and better photographs."

Don often coaches photographers in their work. "An artist is constantly looking for ways, observations, and experiences that will refresh or transform his/her signature style." He will take us on a journey: "shadow and light, falling and rising, questions and answers, barriers and pathways, fear and courage are excellent themes for photography and the living of life." You won't want to miss this monthly meeting!

"Pick Three" Member Slideshow:

After his presentation, we'll run thru our "Pick Three" slideshow of pictures from members like you!

About a week before the meeting, you will be asked to submit up to 3 photos to share with the group (please keep it PG-13). You'll have an opportunity to introduce yourself and talk a little about your photos. Don't worry, this is not a public critique. We're a friendly group who loves to look at and talk about photos as much as you do. And don't be shy, even if this is your first meeting--we want to see your photos!

Please upload your images to our Flickr group and tag them "Sept2014Meeting."

YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS MEETING: For the September monthly meeting slideshow, your challenge is landscape photography. At the August meeting, co-organizer Adam talked about settings and composition tips for capturing and preserving the beauty of Madison's summertime and beyond.

After-Party:

Sometimes we continue the discussion over coffee or drinks nearby. Let's meet at the Atomic Koi Lounge, at the corner of Fish Hatchery and Lacy Road--2685 Research Park Drive. If you can't make the meeting, feel free to meet us at the lounge around 8:30 pm.

Monthly meetings are the heart of our Meetup group. They are held on the first Thursday of the month. We don't take photos at this meeting, but we share our favorite shots from the last month and learn a new technique to work on for the next month. The topic discussed at the monthly meeting then becomes your homework for the member slideshow at the next monthly meeting.

So join us! Meet people who share your love for photography, learn something new, and make some new friends!

We're so grateful Don could speak to our group again, and how we've grown since his last visit. Hope you found it as inspirational as I did.

Really liked how Dan shared finding our signature style as well as emotion tied to images, that they tell a story. This is something to keep in mind as I go out in the world of endless images. His statement "look, feel, shoot" will carry with me as well. Look forward to receiving his Power point.

Don't forget to get your photos uploaded to Flickr tonight for the slideshow. Tag 'em "Sept2014Meeting." Even if this is your 1st meetup, we really want to see your pictures!

So I'm new to flickr and the group. I joined the group on flickr and uploaded my photos to my account and tagged them accordingly. Is that all I need to do? Or do I upload them to the group page?

If you could add the photos to the group, it makes it easier for me to find them.

Sorry I can't make the meeting but I have tagged three photos so that you can see where I am. Back home in a photographer's (and hiker's) heaven, the northwest of Scotland.

Are we supposed to submit only Madison area landscapes?

    August 26

    • Kris H.

It's just a guideline or topic inspiration when you're out shooting during the month. If you have any favorite landscapes, you can submit them. Or just 3 of your fav shots on any topic!
