If a conflict arises with the 1st Thurs of every month I will post with another date, otherwise plan for the 1st Thursday of every month.

Monthly meetup to share photos and discuss techniques. Each month we will pick a theme and shooting technique for inspiration and motivation to get us out practicing and shooting. Bring photos (flash drive, CD or printed) to the meetup on the theme and/or technique to share with the group. If you don’t have any photos to share, feel free to come and join in the discussion.

Please bring, include, or otherwise capture your camera's EXIF data (camera settings - aperture f stop, shutter speed and ISO). This will help us learn and understand the impact these settings have on our photos.

Photo Subjects
Theme: Reflections and Shadows
Technique: Shutter Speed

Shutter speed, one of the three elements of exposure, effects the motion of moving subjects in the photo. Shutter speed can stop motion or allow you to create a motion blur.  You can set the shutter speed for a photo if your camera has manual settings (dSLR cameras and some point and shoots) using either the full manual mode (where you pick the settings – shutter speed, aperture and ISO) or shutter priority (where you pick the shutter speed and the camera picks the aperture and ISO).

For more information on how shutter speed effects your photos check out this article: http://www.digital-photography-school.com/shutter-speed

Sorry I couldn't make the meeting - what is the technique, and what is the theme for November? I'm anxious to get out there and start shooting!

Here are some Audubon outings that will be great photo ops. Many Audubon members are already serious shutterbugs, and they can guide us for what to look/listen for and watch - prairie species as well as birds. [Sat Oct 8] Migrant Songbirds of Pheasant Branch [Wed Oct 12] Tour Madison's Knollwood Conservation Park[ Sun Oct 23] Goose Pond Scope Day [Sat Oct 29] Migrant Songbirds of Pheasant Branch

If ever we need a projector, I can bring one - we would just need a good wall on which to project.

btw, rachel - you might want to check to see what is the resolution of the HDMI output on your laptop. My TV supports 1080p but my laptop sends out only 720p. As a result, it uses only part of the screen. That may by why pictures were hard to see last time.

If we're meeting in the same place, I would like to raise a concern and hope this doesn't offend anyone. It's a beautiful meeting place, but pictures on the TV were very hard to see because it's so far away up high on the wall.

We live nearby off Old Middleton Road and have a 42" plasma TV (HDMI video input @ 1080p24/1080p60). Would that work?

Since Rob is out of town how will we view photos? Huddle around someone's laptop?

My thoughts were either one, but if you can mix the too, Brian, that'd be interesting to see! I think the topic is to work on both, but share the best of your photos - some might be representative of shutter (but not shadows, necessarily), and some might be shadows (but not necessarily based on shutter speed)....? I think the addition of shadows/reflections is to add to the mix of pictures, so it's not all about technique - but again, if you can combine the two - woo-hoo!

Do we need to combine the technique and theme? That is, are we supposed to vary shutter speed while taking photos of Reflections and(/or) Shadows? That sounds hard. Or can we make some photos of Reflections and(/or) Shadows and some photos varying shutter speed?

This month's subjects are Reflections and(/or) Shadows and Shutter Speed. Happy shooting!
