December Monthly Meeting - Portraits Pick Three & Food Photography

Portrait Photography and Food Photography

The theme for the meeting will be Portrait Photography. Hopefully with the holidays and gatherings of friends and family coming up, there will be ample opportunities to practice taking pictures of people.

After we share our photos from the previous month, one of members Nicole will give a short presentation on food photography. That way when everybody is cooking delicious food for the holidays, you can take some great shots to share with the group.

Things to keep in mind:

Look out for distracting backgrounds.

Try both posed and candid shots.

Pay particular attention to the eyes and getting them sharply in focus.

Happy shooting!

Here's a rundown on how the monthly meeting goes.

Meeting Timeline

Pick three slideshow:

I will present a person's pictures, ask that person to introduce themselves, and then talk a little about one or two of them. Next I will give the group an opportunity to offer up praise, constructive criticism, or ask questions about that member's pictures. Then I will move on to the next member's photos.

Technique Presentation and Discussion:

Once everyone has arrived, I or someone else will give a quick (10-15 min) presentation on the monthly topic. After the presentation I like to take some time to engage the group about the technique and answer any questions and get others to give their insight and experiences.

General Discussion:

When we are done with everyone's photos I will open up the group to general discussion. This gives people a good opportunity to get questions answered by a large diverse group of photographers. Sometimes we will continue the discussion over drinks nearby.

When to submit your pictures

As to the source of the slideshow photos, the week before the meeting I will begin pestering those of you who RSVP'd yes to submit your photos.

Where to submit your photos

To submit your photos post them to our Flickr group: and make sure to tag them "Dec2012Meeting" or they might get missed.

What to take pictures of

As for the subject of your pictures, this is very open. The monthly techniques are intended to be somewhat of a homework assignment for you to practice over the following month so by all means submit these pictures if you were able to participate. Otherwise anything goes (but please keep it PG-13). If you have a picture you just love send that. If you have a picture that didn't turn out right and you want help submit that. In the end, what is really important is that you just go out and shoot, so show us what you did.

When to take your pictures

The goal of this "show and tell" is to make sure people are getting out and taking pictures. So I would prefer it if the pictures have been taken since the last meeting. If you are new to the group then by all means pick a few from your portfolio you are especially proud of, but I don't want to see the same pictures month after month.

i enjoyed seeing everyone's work and hearing the feedback/critiques offered. i was disappointed to not receive and feedback on my work at all. i don't think that opportunity was offered to the group, though. we just moved on to the food segment.

Thanks Kris! I very much enjoyed my first photo meet up event. My hat's off to Adam for doing a nice job facilitating. Also, congrats to Nicole for an excellent presentation on food photography. Getting the cover of Madison Magazine rocks -- especially for an intern!! You are indeed a pro Nicole -- embrace it!! :-)

Would love ideas on how to get better pictures of flowers and the grandkids. Especially love to take pictures of fall foliage.
