February Monthly Meeting

The theme for the meeting will be photo collages since that was the topic at the January meeting. Check out this thread in the discussion board with some tips and tricks for creating your own collages. Have fun!

Here's a rundown on how the monthly meeting goes.

Meeting Timeline

1. "Pick Three" slideshow:
We will present each person's pictures, ask that person to introduce themselves, and then talk a little about one or two of them. The group also has an opportunity to offer up praise, constructive criticism, or ask questions about that member's pictures. Then we move on to the next member's photos.

2. Technique Presentation and Discussion:
Each month, we will present a quick (10-15 min) presentation on the monthly topic. After the presentation we will take some time to engage the group about the technique and answer any questions and get others to give their insight and experiences.

3. General Discussion:
When we are done sharing everyone's photos, we will open up the group to general discussion. This is where you can have your questions answered by a large diverse group of photographers. Sometimes we will continue the discussion over drinks nearby.

When to submit your pictures
As to the source of the slideshow photos, the week before the meeting we will begin pestering those of you who RSVP'd yes to submit your photos.

Where to submit your photos
To submit your photos post them to our Flickr group and make sure to tag them "Feb2013Meeting" or they might get missed.

What to take pictures of
As for the subject of your pictures, this is very open. The monthly techniques are intended to be somewhat of a homework assignment for you to practice over the following month, so submit these pictures if you were able to participate. Otherwise anything goes (but please keep it PG-13). If you have a picture you just love, send that. If you have a picture that didn't turn out right and you want help, submit that. In the end, what is really important is that you just go out and shoot, so show us what you did.

When to take your pictures
The goal of this "show and tell" is to make sure people are getting out and taking pictures. So we would prefer if the pictures were taken since the last meeting. If you are new to the group, then by all means pick a few from your portfolio you are especially proud of, but we really want to encourage you to get out and shoot something new.

We had about 15 members who braved the elements to attend the meeting this evening. We had a good discussion reviewing the Pick 3 slide show and discussing next months pictures for the Pick 3. I understand those who could not make it this evening, the weather out there is NASTY. I hope to see you all next month on THURSDAY, MARCH 7. In the meantime, there is the Polar Bear Plunge meetup this Saturday at Willow Island, the Winter Fest Meeting on the 16th on the Square and dinner on February 20th at Babe's on Schroeder Rd. Check out the schedule and hope to see you at one or more of our upcoming events.

How to I find the Flickr group to upload the collage?

    January 26, 2013

    • Steven B.

Natalie - do you have a Flickr account? If now, you can create one for free at www.flickr.com.
From the top navigation, click on "Groups", on the right side of the page will be a box for you to search for a group. Type in "Madison Photography Meetup Group". From that page will be a link "Add Photos", you will be able to add photos from your Photostream to the the groups photostream. Make sure you tag the photos you would to share with the group during the February meeting with "Feb2013Meeting".

I hope this answers your questions. Looking forward to seeing your images in the group's photostream.

Hello everyone! I just joined and I understand most of the assignment. Do these photos need to be local photos or can they be shot from anywhere as long as it's been done recently? Thank you!

    January 24, 2013

    • Steven B.

The pictures for the Collage "assignment" can be from anytime, anywhere as long as you took the photo.

How long do the meetings typically last?

    1 · January 9, 2013

    • Steven B.

William, the meetings usually last about 2 - 2 1/2 hours depending on the number of people attending and how many people have submitted photos to share. I hope this helps. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask away.

      January 9, 2013

  • Steven B.

    Kristi,
The challenge is to make at least one photo collage using a minimum of three images. You may submit up to three collages for sharing at the February meeting.

    1 · January 9, 2013

  • Kristie L

I just joined - are we to make 3 collages or one collage using 3 photos or more.
