Memphis is a wide, disparate landscape from north to south, east to west. Ever drive through Memphis and have it occur to you that you had **no idea that part of Memphis existed?** Do you ever drive through an unknown place in Memphis and wonder about it's story and wish you could document it with someone? Now is your chance. This meetup will meet in a central location, and send people out to photograph Memphis from border to border. It's shops, it's desolate places, it's empty spaces, it's bustling centers - the only limit it the imagination of you - the photographer. When this project is complete after a few weeks, we will get together and pool our resources to explore a slideshow of the work of all participants. Hopefully you will be among them.
What it's NOT:
1) This is documenting the city, it's streets, much like a landscape photographer photographs landscapes. But, in this instance, it is not "landscape photography" it is "city photography." There are wonderful ways to use photography to produce art or a statement but that is not the purpose of this group. This is a group to document, without an agenda, the streets and neighborhoods of Memphis. That's not to say someone will not find the photos beautiful or intriguing - but the point is to let it arise out of the photo itself rather than trying to be a photographer out for a reaction.
2) This is a project with a certain agenda that will appeal to certain people. The aim is very specific - to document streets and landscapes. If you prefer to photograph things like raindrops on railings, or rainbows visible through broken glass in an abandoned lot, this is probably not the group for you. Art photography is amazing, and I don't know a lot of photographers, myself included who don't enjoy shooting and producing art through photography, but that is not the specific aim of this group. The mission is beyond art - it is documenting the city.
