Photo-shooting-session 1: Portrait

Finally we got the people, the equipment and our act together.

After discussing with Keerthi and Jon yesterday on the last Photography in Berlin session we finally have a plan ...

We will meet on Sunday at 13:30 at my place:

Winterfeldtstr. 24 - just 450 meter from the Nollendorf Platz (U1,U2,U3,U4)

I have a spacious living room with a high ceiling (3,90 m) and wide white walls (5 m) which provide a good background for shooting. Two large windows on one side bring in light and give good light conditions.

Everybody brings his or her camera and other equipment they can contribute to the cause. (I have big reflectors, other flashes or tripods. Please post your suggestions what could come in handy and what you could contribute to the shooting)

After coming together and getting an overview about the equipment available and checking out the place and light conditions, we will go around the corner to one of the many ethnic restaurants in the vicinity and discuss over lunch the secrets and recommendations about portrait photography.

Then we will go back to our freshly inaugurated self-made photo studio and get down to work taking (portrait) pictures of each other. (So bring also some more cloth or items if you do not want to end up with the same T-shirt on all pictures.). I will provide drinks and snack and you can either add some drinkable and eatable to the list or you just leave some money for restocking.

The goal is to enjoy an interesting  day, improve of our photography skills, take loads of good pictures (people, portrait) and end up also with a better and more varied stock of pictures of ourselves for private or professional (e.g. applications) reason by exchanging the pictures we took with the ones the others took.

For everybody who can't make it on Sunday afternoon, the next day around 11:00 (or later) will be the next chance to join (or to continue).

PLEASE, leave your comment, response, hints and suggestions. And if you will not able to make it this time. Look out for the next photo-shooting-session.

Coming up: Stock Photography or: How to Publish our Photos and trying to make some Money with it.

Please be aware that the personal safety of you and your guest(s) is your responsibility for the duration of the above mentioned Photography in Berlin meet up event. Thanks!

Last call for your feedback concerning the infos for the list. I just got three feedbacks. This could mean: All fine, go ahead and send around. Or: I don't care or want to be part of the contact list for the other participants. Hmm, I will follow the first interpretation and send out the information I posted each of you or the elaborated version of those who sent me one back in a list to each of you of participants by next Sunday. So if there one of the so-far-no-feedbackers doesn't want to see information published (as I sent you) please let me know until next weekend. Thanks!

    Photo studio lighting.
At Groupon I just came across this offer of a (I assume very basic) studio lighting for 59€. www.groupon.de/deals/online-deal/SVB-Trading/[masked]?nlp=&CID=DE_CRM_1_0_0_284&a=1655
No idea whether this is something worth for getting started with or better invest some more bucks to get to the next level. (Always the same question :-).

Well, looks like David is right. Thanks also for the link. Looks like it is not even a favourable deal compared to the much cheaper offer on amazon. Okay forget my suggestions. Any suggestions for a good starter kid?

It sounds like you can use this with a flash head, which is good if the light doesn't turn out to be bright enough.

Thanks to everybody who joined this photo-shooting session today. I met many new people, enjoyed interesting conversation and learned a couple of new things about Photography and also about organizing the next event(s). If you have some feedback or suggestions what or how to do it different or better next time, what you liked, didn't like or would like to focus on next time, please send it me a note. Every comment, positive or critical one, is highly welcomed in order to learn and improve. Have a good start into the week and see you soon.

I saw the following general warning on several event description site. So I'll just copied it and added it to this event: Please be aware that the personal safety of you and your guest(s) is your responsibility for the duration of the above mentioned Photography in Berlin meet up event. Thanks!

And, please be aware as well that photography and meeting interesting people can be highly addictive. If you can't handle this stay at home and watch TV. Otherwise looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is some sort of limit on the number of people or not. 16 seems already a big number if we are going to use you flat, isn't it?

I have 2 small flash heads, beauty dish, an old FLASHMETER 3 and a somewhat usable soft box. It's portable as I use it on a daily.. Happy to bring it along and share ideas and tricks.. ;)

Hmm, I once saw a function on meetup to send an email to all members you signed up for a particular group. Do not see how to do this for this meeting now. Do you all get notified about the posts on this event site? Please send me a beep (and feedback) if you do. Otherwise I will send you later an individual mail.

Welcome back! I think if Beth makes you an event host for this, you will see the option of sending emails under "tools" right after the RSVP button. Anyway, I can't cycle :) So no oldest tree for me... The 7th is ok provided it is after brunch and before dinner... Anytime on the 20th would be fine too. And otherwise, I'll just try to adapt. Thanks for organising.

      October 2, 2012

    • Thomas D.

Yes you are right, I saw this because I am organizer in another meetup group. I'll write to Beth. Thanks. More soon. All the best to you.

Okay, I returned from Istanbul yesterday night. Thanks for waiting. So I see we are eight now, great. So let's do this soon. I just saw Keerthi organized a nice photo excursion for this Wednesday. So I will sign up as well (having time until 20:00). Anyone of you wants to join, too? We could use the occasion to discuss how, when, where and maybe with whom (in case we want to add a studio or some professional assistance to that meeting). So if you have time to join, do so! Or send in your suggestions or wishes before. After the meeting on Wednesday and hopefully having talked to some of you and gotten some feedback, I will set time, place etc. for this meeting. (Next possibilities for me could be Sunday afternoon [masked]) or the following Monday anytime. The following weekend and beyond 12.-[masked] I am totally booked with visitors so next options again would be 20./[masked]) So if you want to influence the outcome let me know your feedback somehow. See u soon, I hope.

Hi Sasha, we have not met yet. But we will meet once Thomas is back. Probably next week some time.

Hi Ugar.I see your name for tomorrow Templhof meet up. Does any one else have time tomorrow to discuss? After or during the meetup.

    September 21, 2012

    • Ugur

      Hi,
Not exactly as I wanted to go to the exhibition as well afterwards, and actually I am a bit unsure about my plans for tomorrow at the moment...

      September 21, 2012

  • Ugur

    Hi,
A pre-meeting sounds good too. It would need to be in the evening if on a week day though, and preferably after 7pm as I come from Potsdam.

    September 21, 2012

  • Keerthi

    Hi Thomas and all.
I don't mind waiting until you comeback or going ahead to fix a date for the meeting/shoot out. Is it possible to set up a doodle survey for meeting and/or to decide and date. I like the idea of getting tips and tricks from a professional or experienced photographer. My recent experiments with one of my friend marriage was disaster and I would love to learn to take good portraits and group photos. Once we fix the date, we can announce as a meetup and I think if we have a place and date some more people may join? Any suggestions from other interesting members?

    September 21, 2012

  • Thomas D.

    Hi Kerthi & all
now I see another two persons interested in joining. That makes 7 by now & I guess enough to fix a date and a spot. I like also Keerthi's idea of meeting and discussing before in order to get the best for everybody out of this shouting. I will be in Istanbul from Monday early morning to next week and therefore difficult to meet (& organize) still something for this Sunday. On the other hand if Keerthi wants to go ahead & take the lead in this already this Sunday, it is fine with me. I will try to join or can also go along with whatever you decide in case I will not be able to make it. If people want me to organize this meeting or (pre)meeting the earliest proposal I can make is from the 2.-4.10 during the day or Tuesday the 2nd in the evening. I live close to the Nollendorfplatz which might be easy to reach for most of you given that four U-Bahn lines come together here (U1, U2, U3 & U4), but I am also open to other venue suggestions. Your quick feedback appreciated.

    September 21, 2012

  • Keerthi

Are you still going for this? Let us meet and discuss once? please suggest a time and place. I would love to meet on this Sunday to discuss. Any one else want to join?

    September 21, 2012

  • Thomas D.

How about something like this. www.groupon.de/deals/online-deal/STUDIOLINE-PHOTOGRAPHY/[masked]?nlp=&CID=DE_CRM_1_0_0_252&a=1655

Or we just look for a nice venure, hope for the good weather conditions (cloudy, light but not sunny for portrait) and just go!

    September 11, 2012

    • Ugur

Well, that offer is good regardless. So I'm happy doing both.

      September 11, 2012

  • Thomas D.

    Hi Ugur,
good questions! Sorry, I didn't see until now that you and Andre have signed up by now aswell (I wasn't too active here lately). So even Beth is back in Australia by now that would still leave five in. How about aiming at around 8 people (to make it more fun and less expensive) and then look for an expert or a studio to take pictures. What do Julia, Andre & Amy think?

    September 7, 2012

    • Ugur

      Hi Thomas,
Sorry for the two previous ones! :)
8 people sounds good and I also wouldn't want to spend a fortune on it at the moment. Can we also still think about an interesting place, like an old factory - or even something like a technology museum etc.? I also thought of the Biosphaere in Potsdam but we need to be there when it's not crowded. A studio is fine otherwise. But just to make it clear, you want to get an expert to help us learn how to take good portraits rather than getting a professional to actually take our pictures, or?

      September 7, 2012

  • Ugur

So are we going to do this at some point?

    September 7, 2012

  • Thomas D.

    Hi Amy and Julia,
    great! Two more people interested.
Let's see whether we will find some more.
    Have a nice weekend!

    Greetings and see you
    Thomas

    June 9, 2012

  • Thomas D.

... in July, I will not be able to invest much. So I would/could do without expert or structured learning if it would require too much of my shrinking peggybank.

    June 9, 2012

  • Thomas D.

Hi Beth, sorry for late reply and thanks for your imput and offer. I was thinking of a studio with good lighting, white background, managing people etc. Nevertheless to do it one an interesting site (maybe an old factory, in a park etc.) is also a good idea. Best would be to make two events out of it.
Concerning paying for expert or more structured learning. I wouldn't mind to kick-in some money if we get together a little crowd, but given the fact, that I do not have income until my exam ...

    June 9, 2012

  • Beth J.

yep I'm in - do you want to do it on location or in a studio? I think a 2 hour time slot would be about right. Do you want it to be everyone shooting each other or to pay someone to offer more structured learning in terms of lighting/managing people? I can certainly do that, on location and happy to offer it to the group without fee 2 hours max would be enough I'd say. Let me know if you want my help Thomas. It's a great idea.
