A Master Class in Image Construction

How to construct an image

A series of three evening workshops on Wed beginning Aug 6

There is a world of difference between taking a snapshot
and constructing a planned and carefully thought out image. There are many
workshops out there that will teach you how to operate your camera - but here
is one that will get right to the heart of image creation.

Learn how to master the art of image construction in
three fun and informative evening workshops.

Learn how to:

• envision the image before you take the shot.

• understand the subtractive nature of image creation (see below)

• How to create drama in your image

• How to create mood

• How to create the illusion of depth

• and more

The Subtractive nature of Photography
Unlike a painting in which you start with a blank canvas
and add to it only those things you want to show, constructing a strong image
is a subtractive process in which the camera shows everything within the frame
and your task as the image creator is to remove all those elements that will
distract from  or impede the essentialsof your picture.

What you need

This workshop assumes that you are already familiar with
your basic camera controls and are comfortable shootings in Manual, Aperture,
or Shutter speed more.  You should also
have an understanding of metering modes such as Spot Metering.  There will be no  instruction given on how to set your camera.

$130 for the whole series

Tuesdays  Aug 6  Aug 13 and Aug 20  from 7.30pm to 10pm at the the studios of Ian Murray Photography in Pembroke MA.

This was a great workshop on image construction... Now instead of taking picture.. I will be making images... Thanks Ian once again for a great workshop.

I can definitely say that Ian has helped me to improve my compositional skills and to see the previously unrecognized photographic potential of an area or scene to yield a stronger shot. If you want to progress beyond taking snapshots then this course is worth a look.

I'd like to see this packaged as a full day class.

Ed - this class is less effective when run on a single day - part of the rationale is to have participants produce images over a period of time that are then critiqued during class - it's all a bit to rushed if we do it in a single day. Additionally the volume and depth of the material would be brain frying if presented all in one day!

It was a great start to the series .... It made me realize i need to slow down and really think about what i want to achieve in my photography and not just take a snapshot.
