Across the bay from our dog park are the brick buildings of the University of Massachusetts - Boston campus. On those grounds, you will find an entire gallery of sculptures scattered amidst the buildings. Since this campus was built during the worst era of corruption in Massachusetts history, it is only fair to question how the art monies required for public buildings were spent. It is more than fair to ask if such art as the plywood cube painted matte black that is found there is "art." I don't have to ask that question with the creations that appeared out of nowhere on this little spit of land that we all enjoy with our canine buddies. One winter day compositions made of the raw materials washed up by the tides, suddenly started appearing on the tidal plane of the park; the creator remained anonymous and sight unseen. It started with the ubiquitous Zen pile of rocks and weekly morphed into more interesting creations. The artist may have remained anonymous, but the ever-changing sculptures insisted on being documented. After weeks of watching the fascinating sculptures change with the addition and subtraction of pieces of detritus and the changing winter light, one day they were gone - having disappeared with the tide. Now these images are the only record that there was once art in this park.
