Under The Big Top: March 2014

  • March 18, 2014 · 6:00 PM

Our main pitch night is back! But with a new name (which will stay consistent from month to month so you can easily recognize this event) and a slightly tweaked format. Check it out:

6:00-6:30 Mingling & Merriment
6:30-6:35 Welcome
6:35-7:00 Magic Hat
7:00-8:00 Pitches & Feedback
8:00-8:30 Mingling & Merriment

Wait...what the heck is "Magic Hat"?? Well, it's a fun little game that's amazing practice for one of the key skills all great presenters possess - being able to speak off-the-cuff. Upon arriving at the event, everyone writes down a funny/weird/random pitch topic and puts it in the hat. Then, brave volunteers come up to the front of the room, pull a topic out of the hat, and pitch that topic for a couple of minutes. It sounds hard, but it's really not that bad. It's a great way to use your creativity, and you can literally tell us anything about that topic. Make stuff up if you have to. The key is just being able to cobble together a few thoughts quickly and "sell" them convincingly to the audience. As you can imagine, the quirkier the topics, the funnier the game gets.

The pitches (starting at 7pm) will have the same format as last time - 10 minutes each, followed by discussion and feedback. Slides or other visual aids are optional. If you're interested in pitching, send me a message via the "Contact" button in the sidebar.

I look forward to seeing everyone again on the 18th! This is gonna be a good one.

Thanks for a great Pitch Circus, Sion! You created a safe and fun space within which we could comfortably pitch our ideas. The feedback for those who pitched was spot-on, straight-forward, but yet not abrasive. The Magic Hat was a fun way to break the ice and get us out of our comfort zone - all in a supportive way. Thanx!

So...who wants to pitch? Got a few slots left! It's a great opportunity to get feedback from a helpful, friendly group.

Can't find this email. I'll pitch on why the Bulls can win the title this season.

Hmm, I sent it through Meetup, so it should have shown up in whichever email account you have tied to Meetup. But no worries, I've got you down now. You'll have up to 10 minutes, and slides are optional. Looking forward to it!
